Here’s hoping for a spring that brings warmth, happiness and much joy to all. The annual commemoration of the 1848 War of Independence was hosted by the Youngstown American Hungarian Federation at St. Stephen of Hungary Church. This well-attended event proved to be both educational and entertaining. The Rev. Matthew Kiss, superior of the St. Alvary Monestary, was the Hungarian speaker, and James Vargo, former mayor of Campbell, was the American speaker. Joseph Fabre of Beaver Falls, Pa., gave a wonderful presentation of the poem "Nemzeti Dal,” and the St. Stephen dance group performed. The program also featured a Hungarian choir and a piano solo. We welcome back to Youngstown Ken, Michelle, Kayla and Justine Blair. Ken is completing his service to the U.S. government and is hoping to find a position locally. Special get well wishes go out to Branch President Steve Sándor who recently spent some time in the hospital. We wish a speedy recovery to Steve and all others experiencing health problems. It’s so nice to see Mary Torok out again after her bad spell this winter. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who recently lost a loved one, especially the Maty, Sándor and Nemeth families on the death of Joe Maty. Have questions about insurance? Branch 249 Dayton, OH By Anne Marie Schmidt Branch 249 Secretary-Treasurer We were saddened by the recent death of our illustrious President- Emeritus, Steve Horvath. Steve dedicated his time and effort to serving our branch for many years. He was instrumental in forming our bowling league and was invaluable in organizing branch functions, including the fish fry, Christmas party and bowling tournament. His leadership skills and fraternalism will be greatly missed. Our sympathy and prayers are extended to his wife Margaret and their family. Our bowling league will soon be nearing the end of the season and will have the annual awards banquet at Capri Bowling Lanes. Branch 800 Altoona, PA By Vincent Frank Branch 800 President Joseph E. Masic, former president of Branch 800 for many years and a longtime member of our Association, recently received an award from the St. Vincent de Paul Society of the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese, recognizing his 50 years of volunteer service to the society. He was presented the award by Paul McConnell, president of the society. Joe, Branch 800 is proud of you and your many years of unselfish and caring volunteer time that you have given to those who are poor and much in need. Our branch will hold a special recognition ceremony during our May meeting, honoring those completing 50 years of membership in our Association. Those members qualifying for this recognition will be notified by mail. As in past years, we again thank the Home Office for its assistance in honoring these members. Two thank you letters were sent to our branch and read at the March meeting by Secretary George Dorman. One came from the Rev. David R. Becker of St. Dismas Parish at the Huntingdon prison, and the other was from the Blair County Prison. Both letters expressed appreciation for the donations our branch made which enabled these institutions to buy spiritual materials for the inmates. May you all have a most Blessed and Happy Easter.
