Happy and holy holidays to all._________________________ Branch 800 Altoona, PA By Vincent Frank Branch 800 President Seasons Greetings! The officers of Branch 800 wish you all a beautiful Christmas season and a new year filled with peace and happiness. Reservations for the annual Christmas party are being accepted until Dec. 6. Call Vincent Frank at 695-0213 for reservations. The party will be held on Sunday, Dec. 10, at 6:00 p.m. in the social hall of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Altoona. We encourage all juvenile members and their friends to attend. Again, our branch is participating in the Holiday Basket program sponsored by the William Penn. It surely makes the Christmas season a little bit brighter for the less fortunate families. As branch president for the past five years, I can’t help but By Andrew Wohlberg From the Herald & News PASSAIC, NJ — Leaders of the Hungarian Reformed Church spoke with love about the social, religious and cultural role the institution has played since it was established in Passaic 100 years ago. About 200 people, including many William Penn members, attended Oct. 22 a worship service in English and Hungarian marking the close of the congregation’s centennial celebration. "This has been a place where, for generations, families gathered . . . tears shed, laughter heard, anger expressed,” said the Rev. Imre Bertalan at the church at Fourth Street near Monroe Street, which has served as the congregation’s home for the past 90 years. Much of the church’s work here has focused on absorbing Hungarian immigrants into the community. The focus for its next century of service will be bringing back those who have drifted away from the church and its values, according to Sándor Nagy, assistant chief elder and a member of William Penn Branch 51 Passaic. Endre Krajcsovics, the church historian who chaired the centennial committee, said the church has been able to survive because of the dedication of church members and leaders. Krajcsovics cited various influxes of Hungarian immigrants, including a large one following the Hungarian Revolution in 1956, which forced the church to look back and say a big thank you is due all the National Officers who have been so overwhelmingly cooperative in helping us run our branch. And, how could I not say thank you to all of the Home Office personnel? We here at Branch 800 are very appreciative of all the punctual assistance we have received throughout the years. It was nice to meet all of you at the General Convention. We also thank the Home Office for providing us the official flags and flag holder of our Association. They are placed on the officers’ table at each of our branch meetings. Branch 8121 St. Marys, PA By Margaret Marconi Branch 8121 Secretary Branch 8121 held its most recent business meeting on Nov. 1 during which plans were made for our Christmas party for children and adults. We were saddened by the recent death of our branch’s former secretary/treasurer Mary Hallinen. Mary was a very dear friend and a special member. She donated her time to many causes, especially those connected with our hospital and schools. Sleep well, dear Mary, in God’s love. expand. When the church was established in 1895, it relied on its affiliation with a New York City church to send a visiting minister, and local Dutch and German churches for a place to pray. Since then, it has grown into a religious as well as social and educational nexus for the various waves of Hungarian immigrants who settled in this area. JULIUS MACKER WYANDOTTE, MI—The members of Branch 18 Lincoln Park, Mich., and the entire Association were saddened by the death of former National President Julius Macker. Mr. Macker, 93, died Oct. 16, 1995, at Wyandotte Hospital and Medical Center. Born March 12,1902, in Hungary, Mr. Macker moved to the United States in the early 1920’s, first settling in Dayton, Ohio. He later settled in Wyandotte and, in 1932, became a member of the Verhovay Aid Association. An active member from the start, Mr. Macker was elected president of Branch 18 in 1938 and served in that capacity until 1945. In 1939 he represented the branch as a delegate to the Verhovay’s General Convention during which he was elected to the first of two consecutive terms on the Board of Directors. He was elected vice president of the Verhovay in 1947 and served in that office until the merger with the Rákóczi Aid Association in 1955, which formed the William Penn. Following the merger, he was elected in 1956 by the William Penn’s Board of Directors to serve as chairman of the board and first vice president. In January 1961, he was elected national president following the death-in-office of then-National President Coloman Revesz. He served as national president until September 1963. He remained active in the affairs of the Association at both the branch and national levels, serving as a delegate to several more Conventions and being chosen as an alternate national director. In December 1970 he was elected by the Board to fulfill the unexpired term of National Director Michael Faczan, and he remained on the Board until September 1971. In his later years, Mr. Macker maintained residences in both Wyandotte and Bonita Springs, Fla., and continued to attend many of the Association’s fraternal affairs. He also enjoyed visiting the local sportsmen’s club and taking long rides in the country. He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine, who died Oct. 4, 1983. He is survived by two sons, Edward of Wyandotte and Robert of Bonita Springs, five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Oct. 24 at Christ the Good Shepherd Church in Lincoln Park, Mich. Burial was in Woodmere Cemetery, Detroit. The family requests memorial contributions be made to Christ the Good Shepherd Church. May he rest in peace. We ask our fellow members to pray for the eternal rest of Mr. Macker and all our recently departed members listed below: OCTOBER 1995 0001 BRIDGEPORT, CT John Paolino 0008 JOHNSTOWN, PA Ruth Balough Ernest Brink 0009 HAZLETON, PA Peter Rossi 0014 CLEVELAND, OH Joseph C.
