Radvany Branch 13 Secretary As fall approaches and the leaves turn into their glorious colors, we think of coming events such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. Branch 13 will again prepare for Thanksgiving a Holiday Basket for a needy family. Our branch also will host its annual family Christmas party on Sunday, Dec. 10, beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the American-Hungarian Citizens Club, 1051 S. Clinton Ave., Trenton. There will be a short meeting to elect officers for the coming year. Then all members and children are cordially invited to enjoy refreshments, food, goodies and holiday stockings. Branch 14 Cleveland, OH By Dawn Ward Branch 14 President What an exciting baseball season we Clevelanders at Branch 14 have had! As we go to press, the Indians trail Atlanta three games to two in the World Series, but we are still hopeful. Branch 14 will host a night at the races at Northfield Park on Friday, Nov. 17. Try your hand at lady luck and enjoy a delicious buffet dinner with your fellow branch members. For more information and reservations, call Dawn Ward, branch president, by Nov. 13 at 838-1200. The annual Branch 14 Christmas party will be held on Saturday, Dec. 9, at the First Hungarian Reformed Church in Walton Hills. All juvenile Branch 14 members will receive invitations to enjoy a continental breakfast, entertainment and a visit from Santa. Parents attending the party are asked to contribute food items or money to benefit the needy in the Cleveland area. All Branch 14 members are welcome to attend the next meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 7:30 p.m. at 4116 Rockside Road, Independence. Go Tribe! Branch 18 Lincoln Park, MI By Barbara A. House National Director Heartfelt congratulations to the newly elected officers of the William Penn Association: Frances A. Furedy, national vice president-treasurer and acting national president; George S. (Pete) Charles Jr., national vice president-secretary; and Michael J. Hrabar, chairman of the Board of Directors. May you serve long, happy and healthy terms. Congratulations also to the Board of Directors and a special welcome to new Board member Andrew W. McNelis. Thank you to all who contributed to the scholarship fund. Convention Chairman Roger G. Nagy did a marvelous job of chairing the Convention and involving us all in contributing. Every donation was acknowledged, from the smallest to the largest. Thank you. Special thanks to Branch 18 delegates Louis Almassy, Ernest Ecsedi, Betty Holguin, Tom House and Emma Toth. I was especially proud of Krisztina Ann Kortvesi who played a special part in the memorial service, and Arlene Miller who helped Krisztina sound so great. By the way... happy birthday, Krisztina! With each year you make us so proud. You are our special blessing. Our sincere condolences go to Louis Almassy on the death of his sister, Ann. May she rest in peace. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Kathy Novak Branch 28 Reporter It’s so hard to believe the holidays are approaching again. We’d like to remind all members that the annual Christmas party will be held on Saturday, Dec. 16, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Youngstown American Hungarian Club, 2219 Donald Ave. Mark your calendars and watch for the letters in the mail. Santa’s already penciled in a visit to us that day. The Youngstown Hungarian Freedom Fighters commemorated the 39th anniversary of the 1956 revolution on Oct. 22 at the monastery. It was a nice service with wreaths laid at the monument by the Freedom Fighters and Youngstown American Hungarian Federation. All in attendance gathered for a social afterwards in the church hall. Attention all music lovers! Youngstown State University’s Performing Arts Department will hold a free concert of Hungarian music on Thursday, Nov. 9, at 8:00 p.m. at Bliss Recital Hall on Wick Avenue. The concert is being held in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the death of Hungarian musician and composer, Bela Bartók. The annual Thanksgiving vesper services will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 21, at 7:00 p.m. at the Hungarian Presbyterian Church. Refreshments will be served following the services. We welcome back to our area John, Mamie, Johnny and Nicole Tollas. They are relocating to be closer to both of their families. We hope Gabe Nameth enjoyed his recent family visit to California. We also hope all our friends in the southern states withstood the terrible storms of recent months. Many happy returns to those marking birthdays and anniversaries, especially Mary Torok who recently turned a young 80. Our sincere sympathy goes to all those having lost a loved one recently. Branch 28 extends its deepest sympathy to Ernest Arvai on the death of his brother, Joseph P. Arvay. He will be truly missed by all those within the William Penn Association. Branch 51 Passaic, NJ By Arthur Barillo Branch 51 President With summer long gone and Thanksgiving just around the corner, it is hard to believe that the holiday season will be with us soon. It seems as if it were yesterday that we were complaining about those hot and humid days. At our recent branch meeting, the officers finalized plans for our branch’s annual family Christmas party and annual election of officers. Both events will be held on Sunday, Dec. 3, at the American Hungarian Citizens Club, 21 New Schley St., Garfield, N.J. The election of officers will be held at 2:00 p.m., and the party will be held at 3:00 p.m. The party will feature entertainment, refreshments and a visit from Santa Claus. So, children, bring your parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles to our Christmas party. As we said: it’s a family Christmas party. On behalf of the branch officers and members, we wish everyone a very happy and bountiful Thanksgiving holiday. Branch 129 held its family picnic on Sept. 24. We had a good turnout and, as usual, lots of good food. It was good to see Helen Blair at the October branch meeting. She is recovering nicely from her recent health difficulties. Ronald D. Clise, a Branch 129 member from Waterville, Ohio, has begun his studies in veterinary medicine at Ohio State University. Congratulations to Terri and Michael Isabel on the birth of their daughter, Faith Katherine. Branch 129 will hold its Christmas party on Saturday, Dec. 9, at the VFW Hall, 495 Princeton Ave., Columbus. The December branch meeting and election of officers will be held Wednesday, Dec. 13. Branch 296 Springdale, PA By Anna Marie Pochan Branch 296 Secretary-Treasurer Our recent fall bacon roast was well attended and, as in the past, most successful. At our October business meeting, we decided our branch’s annual family Christmas party will be held on Saturday, Dec. 9, at 2:00 p.m. at the Hungarian Reformed Church, 130 Walter Lane, Springdale. Please mark your calendars. Our next regular business meeting will be held Thursday, Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m. Please try to attend. Branch 590 Cape Coral, FL By Joan Mauerman Branch 590 Treasurer/Reporter On Oct. 22, Branch 590 members gathered at the Egret Hall in Cape Coral where they enjoyed a picnic and zsíros kenyér (Hungarian pizza). The menu included kolbassi and sauerkraut, sloppy joes, baked beans, pickles, potato chips and desserts. The table and hall were decorated in a Halloween theme, including three pumpkin centerpieces which were awarded as door prizes. Progressive bingo was played. Congratulations to door prize winners Michael Darab, Tony Di Giulio, Vi Timmer and Joe Mekler. Our thanks to bakers Irene Redden, Irene Slauterbach and Evelyn Glagola. Thanks also to Joan Mauerman who prepared the food and decorations. Birthday celebrants Vi Timmer and Tony Di Giulio received small gifts and were serenaded with "Happy Birthday” by the picnic guests. Get well wishes were sent to John Lesko, Mary Wesslein, William Toth, Elizabeth Posey and National Director Frank Wukovits. We were happy to see at the picnic Helen Toth, mother of Marge Hamari and mother-inlaw of Joseph Hamari, a member of the National Auditing Committee. Elizabeth Varga of Avon Park will be moving to Goshen, Ind., to be closer to her family. Her husband, Steve, died recently. Elizabeth was a branch member and a member of and hard worker for the Hungarian Presbyterian Church in Lakeland, Fla. We wish you the best, Elizabeth. We welcome back from Michigan A1 and Olga Wansa of New Port Richey. Congratulations to Meagan Sue Mirkovich on receiving the youth achievement award. Congratulations also go to Liz Johnson of Lakeland on receiving her brown belt in karate. Her husband, Ben, is president of the parish council at St. Anthony’s Church. They are the parents of two daughters, Jessica and Cindy. All four are branch members. The Hungarian Club of Orlando held a dinner-dance Oct. 15. Music was provided by the International Music Makers under the direction of violinist John Veres. John is president of the Hungarian Social Club in Hollywood, Fla. His wife, Mary, is editor of the monthly newsletter. They are both lifelong members of our Association. By the way, the pork dinner was delicious.
