May this holy season find everyone awaiting the newness of spring with all its warmth and sunshine. The Youngstown American Hungarian Federation recently hosted the annual program commemorating the events of March 15, 1848. The program, held at St. Stephen of Hungary Church hall, provided a very entertaining afternoon for all who attended. The featured Hungarian speaker was the Rev. Dezső Torok, formerly of Our Lady of Lourdes and St. Stephen of Hungary churches, who is now retired but still celebrates the weekly Hungarian Mass at Our Lady of Hungary Church. The English speaker was Mark Peyko, founder, publisher and co-editor of the local paper, Metro Eye. He spoke on the volume of early Hungarian settlers in the Youngstown area and about Louis Kossuth’s visit to this area. Also on the program were pianist Joseph Losoncy, the St. Stephen Dance Group and the Hun-Julia E. Myers, 3, a member of Branch 226, was named Hungarian Princess by the WPA Magyar Folk Dancers of McKeesport. garian Community Choir. The chapel houses the hand of St. Stephen. While in Budapest, the Kubiczkys met with representatives from some of Hungary’s top law schools and other officials in the hopes of recruiting the first Hungarian students for a graduate program designed for foreign students at Northwestern University’s School of Law. They met with officials from Eötvös Loránd Univeristy, The Central European University, the Hungarian-American Commission for Educational Exchange (which coordinates the Fullbright Scholarship program in Hungary) and the State of Illinois Hungary Office.
