Page 6, William Penn Life, November 1994 Building hope In Memoriom Continued from Page 2 Communists lost power, no housing was available and no building was going on. A flood of 34,000 Romanian refugees entered the country, and professional people with good incomes found themselves living on dirt floors and paying three-fourths of their income for rent. The streets of Budapest filled with the homeless. With mortgages nearly impossible to secure, banks demanding 150-percent collateral with 25-30-percent interest, and builders demanding advance payment, something needed to be done. In 1992 Kalman Lorincz received approval for the first Hungarian affiliate of Habitat for Humanity. Habitat now has 20 different communities active in Hungary with 1,500 parcels of land ready to be built on. More than 200 people have worked 500 each to help build homes, plant trees, clean parks and perform other community projects. More than 2,000 volunteers have PITTSBURGH — The Frick Art and Historical Center invites all members of the William Penn Association to a preview of "19th-Century German, Austrian and Hungarian Drawings from Budapest” on Friday, Nov. 18, from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. at the Frick Art Museum, Pittsburgh. The event will feature hors d’oeuvres, champagne and Hungarian music, as well as a guided tour of the exhibit. As a courtesy to William Penn members, you will receive the special Frick member’s ticket price of $7.50 per person ($5 off the normal price), if you mention the William Penn Association when ordering tickets. For reservations, call (412) 371-0606 by Nov. 16. The exhibition includes nearly 100 of the most treasured drawings and watercolors from The Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest Museum of Fine Art. "Drawings from Budapest” draws attention to both the regional qualities of Central European art in the century and the influence of the principal artistic centers of the time, Paris and Rome. Lesser known Austrians and Hungarians are juxtaposed with such internationally revered masters as Caspar David Friedrich and Adolph von Menzel. The exhibition came about as a result of the liberalization of the lending policies of Hungarian museums that occurred after the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe. His Excellency Pal Tar, Hungarian ambassador to the United States, is honorary patron for the exhibition. The exhibition will be open from Nov. 19 through Jan. 8, 1995. The museum is free and open to the public Tuesday committed their time to help, with regular Habitat work camps travelling to Hungary from the United States. Kalman Lorincz believes that with continued support and prayers, Házat Hazát Alapítvány can and is making a difference in people’s lives. I certainly plan on returning to Hungary next year or the year after, not only for the experience of meeting and working with new and different people, but also to be a part of a project that is helping people to build the nation that they love.
