Branch News September 1994, William Penn Life, Page 5 Branch 14 Cleveland, OH By Dawn D. Ward Branch 14 President Branch 14 will resume its month­ly meetings on Sept. 21 after a summer recess. We hope every­one had an enjoyable summer. There are several activities on the Branch 14 social agenda for the remainder of the year. All the Branch 14 members who attended "A Night at the Races” at Northfield Park this spring had such a wonderful time that the branch has decided to host another outing at Northfield Park on Saturday, Oct. 15. If you’re interested in attending, please call Dawn Ward at 838- 1200 by Oct. 10 for reservations. Also back by popular demand is another outing on "Lolly the Trolley” on Sunday, Dec. 4. The Branch 14 members who went on Lolly last December thorough­ly enjoyed viewing Cleveland’s beautiful display of Christmas lights and a delicious dinner in the city’s famous "flats.” For reservations and further details, call Dawn Ward by Nov. 25. Mark your calendars for the annual Christmas party to be held Saturday, Dec. 3 and for our meeting on Sept. 21. Starting in October, our regular monthly meetings will be held on the second Wednesday of each month. Branch 18 Lincoln Park, MI By Barbara A. House National Director Weren’t all those golf tourna­ment pictures in last month’s publication marvelous? As you saw, a great time was had by all. Congratulations to the Preston family; they sure make the game look easy. Thanks to the officers, directors, employees and all who helped make the tournament the success it was. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Kathy Novak Branch 28 Reporter Another summer has come and gone, but the outdoor festivities of the Youngstown Hungarian community are not done. On Sunday, Sept. 18, the Youngstown American Hungar­ian Club will sponsor its annual Heritage Day. The event will in­clude dancing to the Steve Pal Band, demonstrations of Hungar­ian crafts, displays of artifacts, boutiques, and, of course, a menu of traditional Hungarian food and pastries. The day starts at 1:00 p.m. at the Hungarian Club House, 2219 Donald Ave., and continues until 6:00 p.m. Special birthday greetings to Branch 28 President Steve Sán­dor as well as to all other mem­bers marking their special day. Belated birthday wishes go to Branch 28 Secretary-Treasurer Irene Nemeth and Helen Kovach, who celebrated her birthday at the annual Hungarian Day picnic. Happy anniversary to the hap­py couples remembering their special day this month. Mark Phillips, a member of Branch 89 Homestead, Pa., was recently ordained a minister in the Presbyterian Church (JSA. thoughts and prayers those hav­ing experienced the loss of a loved one recently. Branch 88 Rural Valley, PA Our warmest congratulations go to Branch 88 members Irene and Charles Englody who celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on Aug. 15. Irene has been a member of the William Penn Association for 51 years, while Charles has been a member for the past 44 years. We thank them for their loyal­ty to our Association and congrat­ulate them for the loyalty, com­mitment, trust and love they have shared with each other for 53 years. Branch 89 Homestead, PA From The Valley Mirror Mark Francis Phillips, a member of Branch 89 since childhood, was ordained July 31 as a Minister of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church USA at the Amity Presbyterian Church in Dravosburg, Pa. Among those attending the or­dination were his parents, Branch 89 members Rudy and Janet Phil­lips, National President E. E. Vargo and his wife Betty, and National Director Elmer W. Toth and his wife Ruth. Rev. Phillips earned his Master of Divinity degree at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, graduating in May. During the ceremony he was awarded the Watson Samuel Boyce Music Prize which is pre­sented to the graduating senior who has made the most outstand­ing contributions to the life of the Seminary in the area of church music. Since September 1992 he has been a student assistant minister at the Riverview Presbyterian Church on Pittsburgh’s North Side. On Aug. 1, he became the minister of the first Presbyterian Church of Mineral Ridge, Ohio. He will be installed there by Eastminster Presbytery on Sun­day, Sept. 11, at 4:00 p.m. Rev. Phillips graduated from George Mason University in Fair­fax, Va., in May 1991, earning a bachelor’s degree in social work. While at George Mason he worked extensively with the men­tally retarded and was named "Volunteer of the Year” by the Fairfax County Board of Super­visors in 1991. He graduated from West Mif­flin North High School in 1984. He is the grandson of Branch 89 member Anna M. Phillips. Branch 296 Springdale, PA By Anna M. Pochan Branch 296 Secretary-Treasurer Our July 12 bacon roast was well attended, and a good time was had by all. Our branch members are planning to hold their fall bacon roast on Sunday, Sept. 18, at 4:00 p.m. at the United Church of Christ, 130 Walters Lane, Springdale. All members and guests are invited to attend. Branch 800 Altoona, PA By Vincent Frank Branch 800 President As summer vacations come to an end, Branch 800 is resuming its schedule of monthly meetings beginning on the first Tuesday of September at 7:30 p.m. in the social hall of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Altoona. It would be great if those members who are able could attend at least a couple of meetings during the year. Why not make an extra effort? All those who attended our branch’s annual corn boil and wiener roast report that the event was a great success. Chairman Paul Masic and Bob Aiken are to be congratulated for making it the success it was. A big thank you also goes to all of you who purchased items, made the fires, prepared and cooked the food and worked the registration booth. The Rev. Kenneth Greiner led us in prayer before and after the meal and treated us with music. The children in attendance were given special picnic treats. It was good to see there many members who we see all too rarely. Happy birthday wishes go out to all those celebrating their spe­cial day this month. If you are celebrating an anniversary, we say to you, congratulations. We are planning a number of branch activities for the coming year. As these plans develop we will publish them in the William Penn Life. Branch 8121 St. Marys, PA By Margaret Marconi Branch 8121 Secretary Branch 8121 held a meeting and picnic recently at St. Marys Paro­chial Grade School. The event was well attended. During the meeting an invita­tion from St. Marys Church was relayed inviting all William Penn members to march in a proces­sion in honor of the church’s 125th anniversary. We also learned that William Penn repre­sentative Noreen Fritz will visit us at a future meeting. We will be happy to welcome her. Congratulations to member Theresa Marconi who received a $500 scholarship through the Association’s scholarship found­ation. After the meeting we held our picnic, which featured good food and door prizes for all.
