Director Hrabar honored by New Jersey township WOODBRIDGE, NJ — Michael J. Hrabar, vice chairman of the Association’s Board of Directors, was recently honored for his service to Woodbridge Township and the local Hungarian community. Mr. Hrabar received a proclamation from Woodbridge Mayor James E. McGreevey March 19 during the township’s annual commemoration of Hungarian Independence (March 15, 1848) held in the township’s council chambers. The proclamation recognized Mr. Hrabar on his being named Hungarian of the Year for "his long history of dedicated involvement in civic and community affairs.” The proclamation also noted Mr. Hrabar’s service to local fire fighting and veterans’ organizations and his 34 years of service as a township employee, retiring as superintendent of buildings and grounds. The Association joins in congratulating Mr. Hrabar on this well-deserved recognition. NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - The Millstone Valley Chapter of the Sweet Adelines will be the featured entertainment at this year’s Annual Scholarship Days Dinner- Dance to be held Saturday, May 28, at the Somerset Marriott in Somerset, N.J. The dinner-dance will be the social highlight of the 51st Annual Bowling Tournament and Scholarship Days to be held May 27 to 29 in New Jersey. The Millstone Valley group is one of more than 600 chapters of Sweet Adelines International. Founded in 1947, the famous organization of non-professional singers now has a membership of more than 30,000 women. The Millstone Valley Chapter consists of 45 members from Middlesex, Monmouth, Mercer and Somerset counties, as well as parts of Pennsylvania. It is one of several choruses in the Atlantic Bay-Mountain Region, which includes parts of New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania. Most of the members join the chorus unable to read music. But, through rehearsals, workshops and classes, develop into a beautifully harmonic and thoroughly entertaining ensemble. The chorus performs at public functions, such as county fairs, and for private and charitable organizations, including seniors centers and homeless shelters. From Friday night’s reception at the Somerset Marriott to the bowling competition Saturday and Sunday at Carolier Lanes in North Brunswick, there will be plenty of chances to relax and good times to enjoy. In addition to all the fun, there will be some important work conducted over the weekend. On Friday evening the annual meeting of the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation will be held at 5:30 at the hotel. Our thanks go the Tournament Administrator Stephen J. Pittsburgh Folk Festival to be held May 27 to 29 PITTSBURGH — The 38th annual Pittsburgh Folk Festival will be held May 27 to 29 at the Greater Pittsburgh Expo Mart in Monroeville. The theme of this year’s festival, which will have 23 nationalities represented, is "Hats and Headpieces.” The Hungarians will be represented by the Hungarian Ethnic Group of Western Pennsylvania. The menu at the Hungarian food booth will include cold cherry soup, cottage cheese noodles, cabbage noodles, pork and egg rolls, potato dumplings, kolbász and sauerkraut sandwiches and various pastries. The Hungarian folk arts and crafts display will feature illustration of embroidery work. On Sunday, May 29, the group will present a program of Hungarian dances representative of the Palóc Region. Festival hour will be Friday 4:00 to 11:00 p.m., Saturday noon to 11:00 p.m. and Sunday noon to 9:00 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 3 to 12.
