Ohio member earns recognition for years of volunteer service By Elizabeth K. Darago President, Branch 44 Akron, OH "George V. Voinovich, governor of the State of Ohio, hereby officially recognizes Helen Eberhardt for her exemplary service on behalf of the citizens of Ohio. . . this 26th day of May, 1993.” Thus began an afternoon of awards for Helen Eberhardt, an auditor of Branch 44 Akron, Ohio. The recognition continued with a proclamation from U.S. Sen. Howard M. Metzenbaum and special recognition from Ohio Senate Majority Whip Roy L. Ray. Helen’s awards were presented to her by Mark Williamson of WAKC'TV News, which broadcasted portions of the event on the 6:00 p.m. local news. The road to recognition followed years of volunteer service and her selection as one of 11 recipients of the sixth annual Older American (Volunteer) Awards for Summit County, Ohio. National President E. E. Vargo and Branch 44 President Elizabeth K. Darago nominated Helen for the award based on her years of service to the Hungarian community in Summit County. Helen, 76 years young, is a volunteer for the Sacred Heart of Jesus Hungarian Church Ladies Guild, baking kuglóf twice a month and working at various Continued on Page 3 COLUMBUS, OH — The 10th Annual William Penn Association Golf Tournament is only a few weeks away, but members and friends of the Association still have time to register to play in the annual summer outing. The 18-hole tournament will be held Saturday, July 24, at the Turnberry Golf Club in Pickerington, Ohio, located near Columbus. All reservations to play in the tournament and for the golf awards dinner are due at the Home Office by July 9. Those interested in entering the tournament and/or attending the dinner should complete the reservation form found on Page 3 and return it to the Home Office as soon as possible. The awards dinner will be held at the Holiday Inn-Columbus East, located off Interstate-70 and near the golf course. Accommodations for all golfers and guests will be available at the Holiday Inn for $54 (plus tax) per night, single or double. Those wishing to stay at the hotel must contact the hotel directly. The hotel will also serve as the site for a golfers reception to be held Friday, July 23. The reception will feature the annual putting contest for the benefit of the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation and plenty of free food and beverages Michigan member elected to WPA Board PITTSBURGH — Barbara A. House, secretary of Branch 18 Lincoln Park, Mich., was recently elected to the Association’s Board of Directors. She fills the unexpired term of the late William J. Kovach who died May 15. Mrs. House, 50, was elected by the Board June 4 during its meeting held in New Brunswick, N.J. Her term on the Board expires in September 1995. "I am deeply honored,” Mrs. House said, "and I am also very lucky to have the opportunity and privilege of working with people I love.” An active member of the Association for many years, Mrs. House has served the past seven years as secretary of Branch 18. She was a delegate to the 1991 General Convention and an alternate delegate to the 1987 General Convention. Mrs. House graduated from the Michigan State College of Beauty with a license in cosmetology and later served as an instructor at the school. She owned and operated Barbara’s Hair Gallery in Southgate, Mich., for nine years before assuming her current position as a promotional representative for J.R. Marketing. In addition to her service to the Association, she is also active in the affairs of the Dearborn Moose, Wyandotte Boat Club, Hungarian Culture Club and Hungarian Room Committee of the University of Pittsburgh. She also serves as a eucharistic minister at St. Francis Xavier Church in Ecorse, Mich. She resides in Southgate with her husband Tom, who also is a member of Branch 18. The tournament will award prizes to the top male and female golfers and to the winners of various skill shot contests to be conducted along the course. But the big prize will be a 1993 Mercury Sable 4-Door GS which will be awarded to the eligible golfer who scores a hole-in-one on the designated par-3 hole. To be eligible to win the car, a golfer must be a life benefit member of the William Penn Association by July 1,1993, with at least one year’s premium paid. All eligible goiters who score an ace on the designated hole will win a car. Individuals, groups, branches and businesses may also sign on as hole sponsors. Anyone may sponsor a hole for a $100 donation to the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation. Those interested should contact the Home Office as soon as possible. For golfers wishing to play the course on Friday, July 23, the Association has reserved tee times from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Interested golfers should call the golf course at (614) 645-2582 to reserve a tee time.
