Brooch News April 1993, Will’ m Penn Life, Page 5 Branch 14 Cleveland, OH By Dawn D. Ward Branch 14 President The Branch 14 March meeting was cancelled due to a snowstorm. That snowstorm, which preceded the "Blizzard of ’93” by three days, was only a small preview of the weekend’s blizzard. Now we’re finally seeing green grass and warmer temperatures as spring arrives in northeast Ohio. Hurrah! The dates for Branch 14 outings as reported in last month’s William Penn Life were not confirmed due to the cancellation of the March meeting. The dates for the following activities are still tentative: June 13 at Sea World, and Sept. 12 at the Rainforest and Zoo. Details will follow in next month’s issue. Branch 14 member Violet Ceroky of Lockport, N.Y., wrote a lovely letter expressing the enjoyment she receives from reading the William Penn Life every month. She has ALS (Lou Gehrig Disease) and would appreciate prayers from her fellow William Penn members. Mrs. Ceroky, we will certainly pray that you be given the strength to endure your illness and thank you for your inspiring letter. The next Branch 14 meeting will be April 14 at 7:30 p.m. at 4116 Rockside Road, Independence. Please plan to attend. Branch 18 Lincoln Park, MI By Barbara Ann House Branch 18 Secretary Pro-Tem Happy Easter to you and your family. I know most of you are ready for Easter weather. We in Michigan dodged the snow of the century, but I know not all of you were so lucky. 1 hope by now you are all shoveled out. We received our bowling tournament packets from those hard working folks at the Home Office. If you want to be placed on a team or need some help in preparing your papers, please don’t hesitate to call me at 283- 2793. Again, I hope we have a large turnout for this, our 50th tournament. Last year, 1 had the wonderful opportunity to visit the Hungarian Heritage Center in New Brunswick, N.J. I can’t tell you the feelings 1 experienced as I walked through tbe many rooms and displays honoring Hungarians and our heritage. We must not let this slip away from us. Please contribute what you can to keep this vital part of the American Hungarian community in operation. Our condolences go to the family of Rose Tephenhart, a longtime William Penn member and honorary member of the William Penn Ladies Auxiliary. Our prayers are with you. The Ladies Auxiliary will meet the third Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. You are welcome to join at any time. We look forward to seeing you in May at the tournament. Our next membership meeting will be April 5 at 7:00 p.m. Please plan to attend. A good, working branch needs all its dedicated members’ participation. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Kathy E. Novak Branch 28 Reporter Due to the last forceful blow of winter (we hope), we had to cancel the March 14 bingo/card party and reschedule it for Sunday, April 4. The party will be held at the American Hungarian Club House beginning at 2:30 p.m. We hope all our friends and relatives living along the east coast were spared any losses from the severe weather we had in March. This year the local American Hungarian Federation opted not to hold the traditional March 15 program. In the past, weather and other area programs made scheduling a little rough. But, to further promote our heritage, the Federation published fliers containing a brief history of the 1848 War of Independence. Copies are available at local Hungarian churches. Sincere sympathy goes out to Branch President Steve Sándor, Branch Secretary-Treasurer Irene Nemeth, their sister Margaret Maty and her husband Joe, and brother John Sándor and his wife Kay, upon the death of their mother, Mrs. Anna Sándor. May she rest in peace. We also express our condolences to all those who also recently lost loved ones. Belated happy 40th anniversary wishes to Andy and Jeanne Check. The Checks are the faithful hosts of the "Souvenirs of Hungary” radio show aired on WKTL-FM on Saturdays from noon to 1:30 p.m. We also send birthday and anniversary greetings to those celebrating their special days this month. Branch 189 Alliance, OH By Betty Hamby Branch 189 Reporter Branch 189 held its monthly meeting March 6. Our Valentine’s Dance held Feb. 13 was very successful. Everyone enjoyed dancing and listening to music by the Sidekicks Band featuring John Adams. We will have this band again sometime in April. We also held a successful fundraising Tupperware party on Feb. 24. We at Branch 189 would like to extend a special thank you to Rick White, Randy Moore and all who helped to redecorate the hall. We also would like to congratulate Jim Dowds and Dana Strait who were married March 27 and Dan Carlson and Marta Sanisco who will be married April 17. We wish both couples many years of happiness. Our branch hosted a St. Patrick’s Dance March 19 with the Legal Tender Band. More on this event in our next report. We would like to wish our best to those celebrating birthdays and anniversaries this month. And we extend our sincere condolences to those who recently lost loved ones. Branch 800 Altoona, PA By Vincent Frank Branch 800 President Branch 800 is planning a recognition night to honor those members who have attained 50 or more years of membership in our society. It will be held on Tuesday, May 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the basement of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Altoona. Members who qualify for this honor will be notified by mail. This will surely be a great fraternal event. A thank you letter from the Rev. David Becker was received and read at our March meeting. Father Becker is chaplain at the Huntingdon Correctional Institution. He tells us that our branch’s donation helped provide many needed spiritual programs for the inmates. Congratulations go out to John Conti who will be retiring on April 2. John has been working for many years at Garvey Manor Nursing Home in Hollidaysburg. Our branch was saddened by several recent deaths. Among those who passed away were John Baronner from St. Michael’s Church in Hollidaysburg; Walter Quirin from St. John’s Church in Lakemont; Robert Winkler from St. Mary’s Church in Altoona; Rose Marie Houck, wife of member Charles Houck; and Margaret Stoner, wife of member James Stoner. Our sympathy goes out to the families. May the souls of these departed rest in peace. We ask for your prayers for James Stoner who is in Altoona Mercy Hospital. We welcome Joseph and Emma Masic back home from their vacation in California. They were visiting their children and grandchildren. We also wish Joseph a happy 77th birthday. The officers of Branch 800 send our wishes for a most Blessed and Happy Easter to all our members, friends and their families.
