(Photos by Louis A. Fodor) PITTSBURGH — The Hungarian Room Committee of the University of Pittsburgh celebrated its 53rd anniversary with a dinner-dance Oct. 25 in the university’s Schenley Hall Ballroom. The 126 committee members and guests in attendance enjoyed a delicious chicken dinner prepared and served by the university’s staff, as well as a program of traditional Hungarian music and dance presented by some of the area’s top Hungarian performers. The evening began with a warm welcome from master of ceremonies Roger G. Nagy, committee president and a member of the Association’s Board of Directors. The Rev. Paul L. Bolvary, pastor of St. Ann’s Hungarian R. C. Church in Hazelwood, offered the invocation in both English and Hungarian. Then all rose to join in singing the American and Hungarian national anthems, led by George S. Charles Jr., national vice president-secretary of the Association. After dinner, Mr. Nagy announced that the evening’s main speaker, John C. Miller, the committee’s historian and scholarship coordinator, was unable to attend due to an injury. In his place, Mr. Nagy read remarks written by Mr. Miller which reviewed the committee’s current attempts to find a summer studies program at a Hungarian university which would be suitable for the committee’s scholarship recipients. The entertainment portion of the program was a celebration of Hungarian culture: Richard and Malvene Heyz performed two popular Hungarian folk dances dressed in traditional ethnic costumes; dancer Kelly Cloherty presented a ballet to music from Kodály’s opera Hári János; and cimbalom player Anton E. Phillips and violinist George Bátyi were featured in two traditional arrangements performed by Mr. Batyi’s Continental Ensemble. Special thanks were extended to Mr. and Mrs. William C. Kohut who furnished the orchestra and to William Penn Chairman Joseph P. Arvay who furnished the Hungarian wines served with dinner. All proceeds raised from the dinner-dance will benefit the committee’s scholarship fund. The committee thanks the members, friends and guests who attended the dinner. We send special thanks to the William Penn Home Office employees Kelly Cloherty earned loud applause for her hallet to Kodály’s music. who helped to make this event a success: Karen Clarke, Sue Deak, Diane Dinzeo, Debbie Evans, Steve Evans, Robert A. Branch 226 trophy to be housed in WPA archives By Alexander J. Goydan Branch 226 Secretary & Coordinator McKeesport, pa — in 1930, 62 years ago, Branch 226 McKeesport was awarded the "Silver Award Trophy” by the Verhovay Aid Association Home Office. The trophy was awarded to the branch in recognition of its extraordinary membership increase of 110 members over a short period of time. The increase was due in large part to the hard work of Gteza Pavuk, the branch’s juvenile secretary, and Mózes Balogh, Branch 226 executive secretary. Other branch officers at that time were: Joseph Lenart, president; Michael Koleszarik, vice president; John Marton, treasurer; Arpad Kish, auditor; Menyhért Feyes and Joseph Lenart, sick visitors; Joseph Szilagyi and Menyhért Feyes, flag bearers; and Michael Stephan, outer door guard. For the old timers who can recall, the Home Office administration at that time consisted of President Joseph Darago, Secretary John Bencze, Treasurer Michael Varga, Controller Kalman Revesz and Medical Examiner Dr. Samuel Gomory. The recently rediscovered Vándor Serleg silver trophy was originally housed in the Old Hungarian Club located in the first ward of McKeesport. The club was dismantled during the redevelopment of the Magyar Negyed. The trophy was recently presented to National President E. E. Vargo by Alexander J. Goydan, secretary and coordinator of Branch 226. It will now be housed in the Association’s archives.
