Ward Branch 14 President At the Branch 14 meeting held March 11 the members decided that the branch would sponsor another summer outing for mem­bers at Sea World in Aurora on Sunday, June 28. The charge for Branch 14 adult members will be $7.50 and juve^ nile members $5. Regular price admission is $19.50 for adults and $15.50 for children. Along with offering its members a tre­mendous savings on ticket prices, the branch will also have a pavil­ion reserved. Look for a reservation form in the May and June issues of the William Penn Life. Members also discussed a num­ber of other possible branch activ­ities, including a Goodtime 11 cruise, a Lolly the Trolly tour of Cleveland and a summer outing at the Metroparks Zoo. If any of these activities appeal to you, please call the office at 838- 1200. The response from Branch 14 members will determine which activities will be sponsored. If you are interested in bowling for our branch at the annual bowling tournament, please con­tact Branch President Dawn Ward before April 8. The teams will be finalized at the April branch meeting. We meet on the second Wednesday of each month (ex­cept June, July and August) at 4116 Rockside Road, Independ­ence, at 7:30 p.m. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Kathy Novak Branch 28 Reporter In keeping with tradition, the American-Hungarian Federation March 22 held its annual program commemorating the anniversary of the 1848 Hungarian war for independence at the St. Stephen of Hungary Church hall. The Rev. Ken Sausman of the American Hungarian Reformed Church of Youngstown delivered the English-language address, and Tibor Lovagi of Cleveland spoke in Hungarian. Entertainment was provided by the St. Stephen’s and McKeesport, Pa., dance groups. We warmly welcome back to America and Youngstown Ken, Michelle and Kala Blair. The Blairs had been residing in Ger­many where Ken was stationed in the military. (By the way, Kala is a fifth generation member of the Anna Sandors family.) Congratulations to National President E. E. Vargo on being named as Pittsburgh’s 1992 Frat­­ernalist of the Year. Several Branch 28 members are looking forward to attending the banquet to be held in his honor. Branch 129 Columbus, OH By Arpad Sibrik Branch 129 Coordinator During their February meeting at Leonardo’s, the members of Branch 129 discussed plans to send a women’s team, and pos­sibly a men’s team, to the bowling tournament in Dayton. Several members from Colum­bus are planning to go to the Dayton tournament to cheer our bowlers on and to attend the Saturday night banquet. Congratulations to National President A1 Vargo on being named the 1992 Fraternalist of the Year by the Fraternal Societies of Greater Pittsburgh. It is an honor well deserved. We are all proud of you, Al. On June 6, a tribute honoring all U.S. veterans of Hungarian descent will be dedicated at the Hungarian Heritage Center in New Brunswick, N.J. Branch 189 Alliance, OH By Betty Hamby Branch 189 Reporter On March 7, Branch 189 held its monthly meeting at the club hall. During the meeting plans were made for the March 20 perform­ance of Jimmy and the Soul Blazers. Tickets may be purchased at the William Penn and The Bier Haus. Cost is $5 for advance tickets, $7 at the door. Our all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner and our St. Patrick’s dance both were successful. We at Branch 189 thank Bill and Jan Willis and their helpers for all their hard work and time. Anyone interested in compet­ing at this year’s national bowling tournament May 22 to 24 in Day­­ton, Ohio, should contact Bob Schafer or sign up at the club. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Steve Baylor on the birth of their son Joseph Dale on Feb. 20. We extend our best wishes to those celebrating birthdays and anniversaries this month. And we wish everyone a very Happy Easter. Branch 249 Dayton, OH By Steve Horvath Branch 249 President Branch 249 recently concluded its 1991-92 bowling season. Con­gratulations to the 8 Balls and the Pin Splitters who tied for first place honor among our teams. Members of the 8 Balls are Anne Marie Schmidt, Mark Schmidt, Paulette Reid and Larry Reid. Members of the Pin Splitters are Mary Tuss, John Tuss, Viola Matyas and Lou Andzik. Our 1992 bowling banquet will be held April 4 at St. Stephen’s hall. At this banquet our branch will also honor its 50-year mem­bers. Congratulations to these 50-year members: Rose Biscan, Andrew Czieszperger, Anna Galo­­vics, John Likovitz, William E. Likovitz, Mary Lingg, Louis Lor­­encz Jr., Rita Newcomer, Joseph­ine Palló, Priscilla Schwab, Ernest Sonye and Helen Wagner. Our branch welcomes new agent William R. Sipe. Branch 800 Altoona, PA By Vincent Frank Branch 800 President During the March meeting of Branch 800, our branch present­ed its annual donation supporting the spiritual programs at the Blair County prison. The prison’s Catholic chaplain, Father Antho­ny Little of St. Mary’s Parish in Hollidaysburg, accepted the do­nation with great thanks. Due to conflicting arrange­ments our branch’s annual spring communion breakfast has been canceled. We encourage all adult mem­bers, particularly those with col­lege-age children, to read the February and March issues of the William Penn Life. These issues contain important information about the scholarship awards available from the Association’s scholarship foundation. If you have a son or daughter who quali­fies for one of these awards, please contact the Home Office for an application as soon as possible. Deadline for all applica­tions is May 31. Leo Yeager, who has had a long illness, has been transferred from Mercy Hospital to Hillview Nurs­ing Home in Altoona. Leo faith­fully attended our branch meet­ings for years. Please remember him in your prayers. Branch 800 congratulates Na­tional President E. E. Vargo on being named Fraternalist of the Year by the Fraternal Societies of Greater Pittsburgh. We are sad to report that Mar­­garetta C. Wilker, 93, died on March 10, 1992, following an extended illness. She was a long­time member of the former Cath­olic Knights of St. George Auxil­iary. She was buried from St. Michael’s Church in Hollidays­burg. May her soul rest in peace. Branch 8164 Steubenville, OH Members of Branch 8164 attend­ed Mass on March 8 at St. Antho­ny Church with Msgr. Gene Mul­­lett as celebrant. After Mass mem­bers went to the rectory hall where they enjoyed a St. Patrick’s breakfast served by Julia D’Auro­­ra and Matilda Maier. The tables were decorated in green and white. In the absence of Branch Presi­dent Peter Buffone, Vice Presi­dent Angela D’Aurora presided over the ensuing business meet­ing. Albert Di Falco presented the financial reports. National Direc­tor Louis A. Fodor presented an up-to-date report on the closing of the William Penn Home in Wellsburg, W.Va. It is hoped that a successful sale of this land­mark will soon take place. Mike Vecchione, president emeritus, reminisced about the many activities that had taken place at the great building and how it eventually became a haven for senior citizens. Guests from the church choir attending the breakfast were Rose Cortez, Anthony Oliveti and Eugene Saggio. Get well cards were sent to Mr. and Mrs. Bus Grossi. Msgr. Mullett offered the clos­ing prayer. Our next meeting will be held on April 12.
