WILLIAM PENN LIFE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE WILLIAM PENN ASSOCIATION Volume 27 March 1992 Number 3 Hungarian fraternals plan veterans’ tribute PITTSBURGH — The William Penn Association and the Hun­garian Reformed Federation of America will honor American war veterans of Hungarian de­scent with the dedication of a commemorative tribute this summer. The tribute will consist of two items. One will be a large bronze plaque honoring all members of the U.S. armed forces of Hungar­ian descent, both living and de­ceased, who served in any war in which U.S. forces participated, from the American Revolution to Operation Desert Storm. The second part of the tribute will be a book listing the names and addresses of those special veterans. Both the plaque and book will be dedicated during special cere­monies on Saturday, June 6, at the American Hungarian Found­ation’s Hungarian Heritage Cen­ter, located in New Brunswick, N.J. The tribute will then become part of the center’s permanent collection. A committee composed of rep­resentatives from both the Wil­liam Penn Association and the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America is organizing the tribute. In announcing its plans, the committee said it hoped "to remind everyone of the role Hungarian Americans have play­ed in our military history. Hun­garian Americans have always been ready, willing and able to establish and defend freedom and democracy, both here and a­­broad, even at the risk of making the ultimate sacrifice.” The committee also issued a call to all Hungarian Americans for their assistance in completing the tribute. Anyone knowing of a Hungar­ian American who served in any branch of the U.S. armed forces during any war is asked to submit that veteran’s name and address to the committee. Additional information on each veteran would also be appre­ciated. Such information could include whether the veteran is living or deceased, whether he or she was killed in action, which branch of the armed forces and wars the veteran served in, and highest rank attained. Plans call for all such informa­tion to be stored in a computer file at the Hungarian Heritage Center. The information would be made available to those re­searching family histories or other pertinent topics. However, only the name and address of each veteran will ap­pear in the commemorative trib­ute book. The names and addresses of eligible veterans, and any addi­tional information, should be sent to: "Commemorative Trib­ute,” William Penn Association, 709 Brighton Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15233. General chairmen of the tribute committee are Joseph P. Arvay and George Dózsa. Honorary chairmen are the Rt. Rev. Dr. Imre Bertalan and E. E. Vargo. William Penn credit union members approve merger into larger credit union Foundation honors WPA with award for distinguished service PITTSBURGH — The members of the William Penn Association Federal Credit Union recently voted to merge their credit union into the larger Little Giant Fed­eral Credit Union of McKees Rock, Pa. The action was approved by a large majority of those members voting in person at the Feb. 21 meeting of the WPA credit union and those voting by mail ballot. The officers of the WPA credit union agreed that the merger will be of great benefit to their members. Little Giant’s $7.5 mil­lion in assets offers substantial security while its full-time office staff can help members take ad­vantage of a wide range of finan­cial services. WPA credit union members with questions about their ac­counts and what the merger means to them can call Little Giant at (412) 771-6400 week­days between 8:00 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. All credit union members will also be receiving additional in­formation from the officers of Little Giant. NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - The William Penn Association has been named as the recipient of the 1992 Distinguished Service Award presented by the Ameri­can Hungarian Foundation. The Association was honored for its dedicated leadership and contributions to the entire Amer­ican Hungarian community. It has been a strong supporter of the American Hungarian Founda­tion (AHF) and its Hungarian Heritage Center located in New Brunswick. The Association has also demonstrated strong com­mitments to the Hungarian Class­room at the University of Pitts­burgh, refugee assistance pro­grams in Hungary and many other charitable and benevolent causes. The award will be presented during the AHF’s 29th Annual Carousel Ball to be held Saturday, April 25, at the Shackamaxon Country Club in Scotch Plains, N.J. Happy St. Patrick’s Day The award is given annually in special recognition for distin­guished professional, humanitar­ian, artistic and personal service. Among those so recognized is Na­tional Vice President-Treasurer Frances A. Furedy, who was hon­ored at last year’s ball. "We are both honored and humbled by this recognition,” said National President E. E. Vargo.
