Postmaster: If undelivered, please send form 3579 to: William Penn Association 709 Brighton Road Pittsburgh, PA 15233 A Day of Family Fun Scenes from the 69th Annual William Penn Home Festival Nearly 1,000 fraternalists from throughout the United States gathered on Ellis Island on June 14 to honor the nation’s flag and to pay tribute to the millions of immigrants who came to America pursuing dreams of freedom, opportunity and prosperity. "Fraternalists have long expressed their patriotism to the United States by the recognition and celebration of Flag Day,” said National Fraternal Congress of America President W. Patrick Donlin. "We have also had a major role in espousing the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance through which we formally recognize our flag and country.” Former U.S. Attorney General ATTENTION! ALL PARENTS! The Association would like to remind all parents that for 1991 there has been a change in the regulations regarding the issuing of Social Security numbers for children. All children who are at least one (1) year old and are listed as dependents on your tax return MUST have their own Social Security number. Herbert Brownell, who played a major role in saving the Island for restoration, was the featured speaker at the gathering. He addressed the importance of the Bill of Rights. A salute to the Armed Forces followed by a sing-along of patriotic songs concluded the official ceremony. In addition, fraternalists toured the museum. For many, the Immigrant Wall of Honor was the first stop. This wall lists 200,000 names of immigrants, individuals or families who gave $100 per name to the restoration fund. Fraternalists also viewed the commemorative plaque honoring NFCA member-societies for their financial support to the restoration of Ellis Island. Others paused at displays that traced the various stages of immigrant processing. Still others enjoyed a film about the immigration experience, entitled "Island of Hope, Island of Tears.” At 7:00 p.m. all joined with millions of Americans across the land in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. For dinner a stew, derived from a recipe used during peak immigration years, was served. Each participant received a commemorative poster and a souvenir bag filled with patriotic items donated by member societies. Fodor) Arvay wins drawing for free trip to Hungary PITTSBURGH — Joseph P. Arvay, chairman of the William Penn Association Board of Directors, was the lucky winner of the Association’s free-trip-to-Hungary drawing. The winning ticket was picked July 13 during the National Golf Tournament awards banquet held at the Sheraton Inn Pittsburgh North. Chairman Arvay will have the option of accepting two free roundtrip coach tickets to Hungary or taking two roundtrip coach tickets of equal or lesser value to any other destination of his choice. The Association again thanks Fugazy International Travel of North Brunswick, N.J., for donating the airline tickets. We also thank all those who entered the drawing; through your generosity a total of $4,717 was raised for our Association’s Scholarship Foundation.
