. . August 1990, William Penn Lifer Page 3 Golfers, guests enjoy successful tournament COLUMBUS — Jack Kelly shot a 73 and Dorothy Constantini scored a 93 to capture the men’s and women’s low gross titles at the Seventh Annual William Penn Association National Golf Tournament. Joining them in the winner’s circle were Scott Peterfy and Helen Francus who won the low net titles with scores of 72 and 75 respectively. The four winners were among a tournament-record 174 golfers who enjoyed the nearly perfect weather July 7 at the Steeplechase Country Club in Groveport. The low gross title was Mrs. Constantini’s third in the past four William Penn tournaments. Each of the four champions took home a pair of golf shoes as a prize for their fine efforts. And two of the four—Mr. Kelly and Mrs. Constantini—took home additional prizes for winning one of the skill shot contests. Mr. Kelly got his ball closest to the pin on #3, and Mrs. Constantini hit the longest drive on #9. Other skill shot winners were: Karen Katona for getting closest to the pin on #3; Jerome Hamby with the longest drive on #9; Richard Mohn and Jean Atutes for getting closest to the line on #10; and William Furedy and Olga Burinda for the longest putts on #18. Once again, the only prize that went unclaimed was the new car for a hole-in-one on #16. Even though most golfers agreed the pin placement could not have been better, no one could score the ace to win the car, and only one birdie was scored on #16 all day. But there was plenty of excitement at #8 when Clint Atkins scored a hole-in-one on that hole. It was his very first hole-in-one. He did not win the car, but his ace did win him an all expenses paid weekend near Houston to compete in the National Hole-In- One Association’s $100,000 Tournament of Aces next year. Mr. Atkins’ feat underscored the advantages of owning a William Penn life insurance policy. For if he had scored his hole-inone on #16, he would not have won the car because he was not a life benefit member at that time. After the day’s golfing was done, a record number of golfers and guests gathered for the annual golf awards dinner at the Hilton East Hotel ballroom. Like the previous day’s golfers reception in the same room, the dinner was an informal and relaxing affair where good spirits and fraternalism abounded. National President E. E. Vargo emceed the dinner program which included greetings from Chairman of the Board Joseph P. Arvay. After all the golfing prizes and many door prizes were given away, everyone prepared themselves for the fun of the annual auction raffle. The weekend’s activities raised more than $3,000 for the Association’s scholarship foundation. Friday’s putting contest raised $360 while another $2,700 was donated by the 27 members, branches and businesses which sponsored golf holes.
