It’s every bowler’s dream. To the few who have realized that dream, it has meant jubilation, a once-in-a-lifetime thrill, a moment of notoriety. To the member who bowls a perfect game at the 46th Annual William Penn Association National Bowling Tournament and Scholarship Days, it will also mean $10,000. The $10,000 prize for a perfect game will be just one of many special features at this year’s bowling tournament, to be held May 26 to 28 in Pittsburgh. To be eligible to win the $10,000, a bowler must be a life benefit member of the William Penn Association by April 1, 1989, with at least one year’s premium paid. Only games bowled during the team event on Saturday or the singles or doubles events on Sunday will qualify. Practice games will not count. Should two or more members bowl a 300 game during the tournament, the $10,000 will be divided equally amongst the winners. Hotel accommodations for this year’s tournament will be at the Hilton Hotel in downtown Pittsburgh. Room rates will be $63 per night, single or double occupancy. The bowling competition will take place at Princess Lanes in Whitehall Boro, just outside of Pittsburgh. Free transportation between the hotel and the lanes will be provided to all bowlers. The tournament is being sponsored under the moral support sanction of the A.B.C. and W.I.B.C. with high score recognition. Entry forms are being mailed to Association branches. All entries must be postmarked no later than April 21, 1989. The weekend will open Friday night with the annual meetings of the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation and the Louis L. Varga Scholars Guild at the hotel. The weekend will also feature the annual tournament awards banquet to be held Saturday evening at the hotel ballroom. So, bowlers, enter now . . . because dreams can come true. Magic moment These children at Branch 34 Pittsburgh’s family Christmas party enjoy a few moments with one of the "stars" of the magic show presented during the party. More such moments from our branches’ Christmas parties are captured in our special photo spread, Pages 6 and 7. (Photo by William Mayor) Officials, members meet to discuss plans for summer activities PITTSBURGH — Representatives from the William Penn and other Hungarian organizations met Jan. 12 at the Home Office to discuss plans for a full schedule of Association activities being held in the Pittsburgh area this summer. During two hours of open discussion, preliminary plans were made for this year’s national bowling and golf tournaments, the annual Family Festival, and a special William Penn "Family Day” at Kennywood Park. "With all four of these major fraternal activities scheduled to be held in and around Pittsburgh, we felt it was necessary to get organized as quickly as possible,” said National Secretary E. E. Vargo, who chaired the meeting. "We wanted to 'hit the ground running’, getting as many members and fellow Hungarians involved from the start,” he said. The special planning meeting drew about 40 people representing the Association’s Home Office, Board of Directors, and Pittsburgh area branches, as well as the William Penn Home, Hungarian Ethnic Group of Western Pennsylvania and Magyar Folk Dancers of McKeesport, Pa. Secretary Vargo began the meeting with a review of the 1988 Family Festival held at the William Penn Home in Wellsburg, W.Va. He noted that net proceeds from last year’s Festival were greater than $7,400, or 43 percent higher than the previous year. See 'Activities’ Page 2 Rates for Caribbean Cruise lowered again PITTSBURGH — The first-ever William Penn sponsored Caribbean Cruise sets sail in about two months, but members and their guests can still reserve a spot with the Association’s cruise group. Those who sign up now can join those who have already booked passage in enjoying even further reductions in the cost of the cruise. The rate for an inside cabin is now only $1,175 per person and the rate for an outside cabin has been reduced to just $1,275 per person, said Ron Lombardo of the Mercur-Lombardo Travel Agency in McKeesport, Pa. "Because of the members’ response to this cruise, we have been able to negotiate yet another reduction in price,” he said. "With this latest reduction, members can now save $418 off the regular inside cabin rate and $433 off the regular outside cabin rate.” Mr. Lombardo also noted that all the cabins reserved for the William Penn group have been recently remodeled and are located on the ship’s Main deck, one deck below the top deck. "These are quality cabins. We did not reserve any 'uppers and lowers,’ or what many people might call 'bunk beds,”’ he said. The seven-day cruise will set sail from San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Saturday, April 22, aboard the Italian cruise ship msCarla- Costa. During the cruise, members will visit five of the most beautiful ports of call the Caribbean has to offer. The first stop will be the island of Curacao, followed by glamorous Caracas, Venezuela. The cruise will then sail to picturesque Grenada, the tropical reefs of Martinique and, finally, St. Thomas. The cruise returns to San Juan on Saturday, April 29. Costs are based on double occupancy and include roundtrip air fare to San Juan, ocean transportation and accommodations, all meals and entertainment aboard ship, ground transfers, port taxes, international departure tax and airport security charge. A deposit of $200 per person is required to reserve space on the cruise. Deposit checks should be made payable to "Mercur- Lombardo Travel.” To reserve your space on our cruise, complete the reservation form found on Page 2 and mail it, along with your deposit, to: Mr. Zoltán B.
