Page 4, William Penn Life, May 1989 Plans finalized for annual golf tournament PITTSBURGH — Just two months remain before the first golfers tee off at the Sixth Annual William Penn Association Na­tional Golf Tournament. The tournament will be played on Saturday, July 15, at the Tam O’Shanter Golf Course in West Middlesex, Pa. The tournament festivities, highlighted by the hole-in-one contest for a new car, promise to make for a great getaway weekend for William Penn golfers, their spouses and their friends. Once again, it is the hole-in­­one contest which is generating the most excitement about the tournament. The first eligible golfer to score an ace on the designated hole during tourna­ment play will win a new car courtesy of the Association. To be eligible to win the car, a golfer must be a life benefit mem­ber of the William Penn Associa­tion by June 1,1989, with at least one year’s premium paid. Social members will be not eligible. In addition to the contest, there will be many other activities for golfers and their guests to enjoy. The weekend will open Friday, July 14, with a special hospitality reception at the Sheraton Inn Shenango, headquarters for the tournament. The inn is located across Interstate 80 from the golf course. The reception will feature food and beverages plus the popular putting contest for the benefit of the W illiam Penn Fraternal Asso­ciation Scholarship Foundation. Tournament play will begin early Saturday morning. Each golfer will receive a special golf gift at Number 1 tee and refresh­ments along the course. Capping the weekend’s events will be the annual golf awards banquet at the Sheraton Inn. Cocktail hour will begin at 6:30 p.m. with dinner to be served at 7:30 p.m. All banquet guests will be eli­gible to receive one of the many door prizes that will be given away after dinner. The evening will also feature the annual auction raffle for a complete set of golf clubs and bag worth approximately $ 1,000. To be eligible to participate in the auction raffle, a guest must be a life benefit member of the Associ­ation by June 1, 1989, with at least one year’s premium paid. Entry fee for the tournament is $30 for William Penn members and $35 for non-members. The fee includes greens fees, carts, golf gift and refreshments on the course. Tickets for the banquet are $20 per person. Hotel accommodations will be at the Sheraton Inn Shenango, located at Interstate 80 Exit IN (Pa. Rte. 18). Rooms are $52 per night for single or double occu­pancy. The inn features comfort­able rooms, an indoor heated pool, a fine restaurant, and a nightclub with a D.J. and live entertainment nightly. All reservations are due at the Home Office by June 23, 1989. Golfers will have the option of playing in either a regular handi­cap division or in the Calloway handicap division. Golfers who would like to use their established handicaps from their home golf courses must submit them with their tourna­ment registration form, along with verification of either their golf club professional or another person authorized to verify handi­caps at their golf club. Only those golfers submitting handicaps with proper verifica­tion will be eligible to play in the regular handicap event. This year’s tournament also introduces the sponsorship of individual holes. For a $100 donation, an individual, branch, group or business can be named as a sponsor of a hole during the tournament. The sponsor’s name will be placed on a sign at each tee. Sponsors and their holes to date include: Computer Special­ties Corp., #1; Jeff and Dawn Ward, #2; Joseph P. Arvay, #4; United Electric Motors, #9; Stephen G. Danko, #10; Deci Corp., #13; Branch 14 Cleveland, #14; Jim Szuch, #17; and Walt Dillen, #18. Anyone wishing to sponsor a hole should contact National Secretary E. E. Vargo at the Home Office.
