Branch 1 Bridgeport, CT By William J. Bero National Director William Penn Branch 1 members and guests danced their way into the new year at a 1989 New Year’s Eve Celebration held at the United Church of Christ Bessemer Center in Bridgeport. The evening featured a smorgasbord of delicious food prepared by William Penn and church members. Television door prizes were given away and won by Mrs. Joyce Staudinger of Newton, Conn., and Mrs. Ethel Cooper of Bridgeport. Mrs. Judith Walewski, Branch 1 auditor, won an assortment of Hungarian wines. The merriment continued well into the small hours of the morning, and warmest wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous new year were exchanged between one and all. Branch 8 Johnstown, PA By Steve Petruska Branch 8 Treasurer William Penn Association Branch 8, located in Johnstown for the past 90 years, held its election of branch officers for 1989 on Dec. 11 at the Johnstown/Windber Hungarian Reformed Church social hall. Reelected by acclamation were Vera Petruska as president, Elizabeth Maurer as secretary, Steve Petruska as treasurer, and Elaine Petruska and Elizabeth Maurer as auditors. After the installation of officers, the branch held its annual family Christmas party. As the children and their parents came in, they were greeted by Steve Petruska. In return for their invitations, the children received yuletide money gifts, carol and coloring books, balloons, and William Penn sponges. Each family also received a 1989 William Penn calendar. Suddenly, Santa Claus appeared, greeting the children and their parents with his merry and cheery "Ho! Ho! Ho!” While Santa held the little ones by the decorated Christmas tree, the children whispered into his ear what they wanted for Christmas. As Christmas carols played, everyone enjoyed wonderful food and refreshments and conversed with one another, never noticing that Santa had suddenly disappeared. Santa was truly enjoyed by one and all. The officers of Branch 8 wish to thank the Board of Directors for its generous allocation toward our Christmas party. We also wish to thank the Home Office staff for supplying the invitations and gifts given to the children. We at Branch 8 try to show these lovely children and their parents that the William Penn Association really believes in their future. Our meetings are held on the second Sunday of each month at the Johnstown/Windber Hungarian Reformed Church, corner of Ninth Avenue and Chestnut Street in the Cambria City section of Johnstown. All members are cordially invited to attend. Branch 13 Trenton, NJ By Elsie H. Radvany Branch 13 Secretary Branch 13 held its annual meeting and family Christmas party on Dec. 11 at the American Hungarian Democratic Citizens Club. Election of officers for 1989 was held and the following were unanimously reelected: Frank J. Radvany, president; Joseph Hamari, vice president; Elsie H. Radvany, secretary; Anthony C. Beke, treasurer; and Margaret Hamari, controller. Stephen Barnacz installed the newly elected officers. President Radvany extended Christmas greetings on behalf of the National Officers, Board of Directors, Auditing Committee, Advisory Board and Branch 13 officers to all. Following the meeting the children and members enjoyed the party, which featured a delicious buffet of kolbász, cold cuts, salad, and homemade Hungarian kiflies. Christmas stockings filled with goodies were distributed to the children and members along with the Christmas carol booklets. Branch 13 extends its sincere thanks and appreciation to the Home Office for its contribution to our Christmas party. For servicing your insurance needs, please contact Elsie H. Despite a blizzard which struck the Cleveland area that day, 78 children and their parents attended the party. The children were entertained by a puppet show and a performance by Lucky the Clown. Joe and Margie Jeromos led everyone in the singing of Christmas carols. The highlight of the afternoon was the appearance of Santa, who distributed gifts to the children. Afterwards a delicious buffet meal was enjoyed by all. Branch officers for 1989 were elected during the December meeting. The officers are: Rose Kaul, president; Violet Sarosi, vice president; Ernie Sarosi, treasurer; and Dan Dorulla, secretary. Branch meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month. All members are welcome and encouraged to attend. Branch 15 Chicago, IL By Arpad Laczina Branch 15 President The annual Christmas party of Branch 15 gave all our members an opportunity to relax and enjoy a traditional Christmas atmosphere with families and friends. As families arrived for the party at the Aranybika restaurant, they were greeted by the branch officers and seated at large tables. The children kept themselves occupied with their free balloons and coloring books while the adults conversed amongst themselves. When everyone got settled, we were entertained by several of the children who recited that classic Christmas poem, "’Twas the Night Before Christmas.” After this fine presentation, everyone received carol books and began singing the traditional songs. After a few heroic attempts at singing a cappella we were fortunate to find someone who volunteered to accompany us on the piano. Special thanks go to Eva Laczina who did a beautiful impromptu job accompanying us. Following the entertainment, the restaurant staff served a light lunch. Then came Santa Claus. As usual the younger children were awed by the opportunity to meet this celebrity, sit in his lap, and talk to him. The older children demonstrated their sophistication by taking things a little more casually and showing more interest in the candies that they received. Branch President Arpad Laczina and Frank Balogh, branch president emeritus, each addressed the members and thanked them for attending. After Santa left, everyone sat around and talked before leaving and taking some of the holiday spirit with them. In other news, 21 members from Branch 15 recently attended a dinner in Chicago to benefit the refugees from Erdély. We call on all our members to support this relief effort. Branch 16 Perth Amboy, NJ By Melissa Mirkovich Branch 16 Reporter Branch 16 experienced a successful turnout at its annual family Christmas party held Dec. 11. National Director Michael Hrabar welcomed everyone. Steve Mészáros led all in the singing of Christmas carols. Jonjie the Clown was there to entertain us. At the end of the party, we had a surprise visit from Santa Claus, which delighted the children. Many thanks go to the Mirkovich family, the Hrabar family, Mr. and Mrs. Mészáros, and Mr. Sabo for making the party possible. Before the party, members elected branch officers for 1989. Elected were: George Mirkovich, president; Mary Mészáros, vice president; Steve Mészáros, secretary/treasurer; Annette Hrabar and Michaelene Mirkovich, auditors; and Melissa Mirkovich, reporter. We wish all of our fellow members much good health and happiness in 1989. Branch 19 New Brunswick, NJ By Ruth Vasvary Branch 19 Coordinator Here we are again with a new year — and all the special days and new experiences it has to offer — before us. It’s always fun to bring out the new calendar and make a note of the days we want to remember.
