It is a great pleasure to use my official visit to the United States of America to give my respectful greeting in the name of the Hungarian Peoples Republic to all American citizens whose roots reach back to Hungary. The Old Country feels more and more responsibility to Hungarians who live outside of the homeland and belong to some other nation, but keep themselves always Hungarian; she pays a great deal of attention to the nearly two million Hungarians who have found their homes in the U.S.A. We proudly accept the fact that they have become useful and respected citizens of the U.S.A. It is very important for us to preserve together with the immigrants our Hungarian heritage and culture, to keep our language alive outside of Hungary and make the bindings stronger between the Old Country and the ones who left Hungary. This is important in spite of our different opinions. All the work by Hungarian organizations, churches, associations, and people with Hungarian backgrounds in the U.S.A. for the sake of the Hungarian heritage and better understanding between the two countries is really treasured by the Hungarian Government. We are especially grateful to those American Hungarians who over a few decades helped to arrange for St. Stephen’s crown and the crown jewels to be sent back to Hungary where they belong. We may call this time a new beginning of the relationship between our country and the U.S.A. The best conditions are present today to widen this relationship: improved East-West relations, a better international political atmosphere, and, most of all, a determined decision by the two countries to make their various cooperative efforts work better in the future. The Hungarian foreign policy very consciously strives for the best possible international political conditions to make Hungary’s economical and political renewal work. She puts forth her best effort to get all the advantages of the East-West cooperation. The United States is greatly interested in our economical and political ambitions inside of Hungary, and indeed, the nation’s ambitions and political events deserve all these attentions. Hungary has reached a new phase in its 20th century history. The renewal of the economic reforms is a big part of this phase, as are her political efforts for a better democracy, the human rights, and a better life for her citizens. The Hungarian people want to be a part of the effort for world peace and want to get their share of the results. In this great spirit we are now remembering the 950th anniversary of St. Stephen’s death and the upcoming 1,100th anniversary of our country. All these historical events prove that Hungary is capable of achieving prosperity and getting in line with the highly developed countries, while in the meantime giving her best efforts to the benefit of humanity, too. We are turning our heads now to the World and are reaching out our hands to all those friends, and here we are especially thinking of our American Hungarian citizens, who are willing to help Hungary reach her goal of world peace, economic and political renewal, international recognition, and, most of all, our nation’s ascension. ♦ ♦ / Üzenet Grosz Károly tói az Egyesült Államokban élő Magyarsághoz A/ Egyesült Államokban tett hivatalos látogatásomat örömmel has/nálom lel arra. hogy a Magvar Népkö/társaság kormánya nevében tisztelettel kös/öntsem a magvar s/árma/ású amerikai állampolgárokat. A magyar kormány igen értékesnek tartja a/t a szerepel, amelyet a/ Egyesült Államokban élő magyarság, annak egyesületei és egyházai a s/á/adelö óta játszanak a magyar és a/ amerikai nép kö/ötti megértés erősítésében, a két ors/ág kö/ötti együttműködés elmélyítésében. Különösen hálásak vagyunk a/oknak a magyar s/árma/ású amerikaiaknak, akik egy évti/eddel e/elölt tevékenyen segítették a szent korona és a koronázási ékszerek ha/ajuttatását. s e//el a magyar-amerikai vis/ony rendezését, a kapcsolatok uj s/a kas/á na k mega lapo/ását. A magyar-amerikai kapcsolatok bővülésének ma kedvezőek a feltételei. Ebben a/ irány ban hat a kelet-nyugati vis/ony. a nemzetközi légkör javulása, csakúgy , mint a két kormány eltökélt szándéka, hogy előmozdítsa a Magyar Népkö/társaság és a/ Egyesült Államok s/erteága/ó együttműködését. A magyar külpolitika céltudatosan törekszik arra. hogy a ga/dasági-társadalnn megújuláshoz a lehető legkedvezőbb nemzetközi feltételeket bi/tositsa. Hozzájáruljon a kelet-nyugati párbeszédhez, a bizalom építésébe/ és a kétoldalú kapcsolatok bővítése útján hozzájáruljon a nemzetközi együttműködésben rejlő konkrét előnyök kiaknázásához. Mindebben különösen nagy jelentőséget tulajdonit a magyar-amerikai kapcsolatok fejlesztésének. A/ amerikai politikai és gazdasági körök ugyanakkor nagy iokú érdeklődést és szimpátiát tanúsítanak a magyarországi belpolitikai fejlemények és ga/dasági törekvések iránt. A hazai események valóban méltóak a figyelemre! Magyarors/ág huszadik s/á/adi történetének újabb sorsfordulójához érke/etl. A megújulási folyamat kiterjed a ga/dasági reform továbbfejlesztésére csakúgy, mint a politikai intézmények megreformálására, s a demokrácia, a/ állampolgári jogok kiteljesítésére. A szocialista Magyarors/ág ily módon kíván lel/árkó/ni a világlejlödés élvonalába. Céljaink elérése nyíltságot és nyitást, kiterjedt kapcsolatrcnds/ert kíván. A magyar nép rés/t akar vállalni a békére, a bi/alomra és a gyümölcsöző együttműködésre épülő nemzetközi rend (elépítésé ben. Reporting of members’ Social Security numbers In recent months, our premium notices have included a message asking members to furnish us with their Social Security number. Under the regulations of the Internal Revenue Service, our Association is required to have on file the Social Security number of every member age five and older. If we do not have your number, you will soon be receiving a letter from our Home Office asking you to send us your Social Security number. Exhibit focuses on Hungarian immigrants ITHACA, NY — An exhibit detailing the experiences of 20thcentury Hungarian immigrants opened Aug. 20 at the DeWitt Historical Society of Tompkins; County located in Ithaca. The exhibit describes the experiences of three waves of immigrants from Hungary: the group that arrived before 1910 and settled in Lansing and on Ithaca’s West Side; the post-war displaced persons; and the immigrants who arrived after the Hungarian revolution of 1956. The exhibit displays historical photographs collected from the community over the past three years.
