June 1988, William Penn Life, Page 11 In Memóriám PITTSBURGH — It is with great sadness that we report the death of a longtime friend of our Association and a friend of all fraternal societies, the Honorable Richard S. Caliguiri, Mayor of Pittsburgh. Mayor Caliguiri, died May 6, 1988, from heart failure stemming from amyloidosis, a rare and incurable disease that was diagnosed in the mayor last year. He was 56. Mayor Caliguiri leaves behind him a legacy that includes a list of public accomplishments and a level of popularity and respect that few politicians enjoy. It was Mayor Caliguiri who organized the Renaissance II development program which reshaped the city’s skyline and turned this dying steel town into a world leader in the computer and hightech services industries and earned it recognition as' 'America’s Most Livable City.” He also led the fight to keep the Pirates professional baseball team in the city when the club was put up for sale three years ago. But, more than this, it was his faith in the city and his genuine love for his fellow citizens that earned him the support of virtually the entire community. From the time he began his political career in the city’s parks department to his last days as mayor, Caliguiri made a determined effort to stay in touch with the average citizen. While other politicians were trying to establish a place in the old-line political machinery, Caliguiri spent coundess hours attending every neighborhood meeting he could. It was often said that wherever you find two Pittsburghers together, you’ll also find Dick Caliguiri. His support for the common citizen was shown in his strong support of the many fraternal societies located in Pittsburgh, including the William Penn. Mayor Caliguiri never hesitated to lend his support to such fraternal efforts as the annual Fraternal Week. Mayor Caliguiri, whose grandmother was Hungarian, visited the Home Office in February 1986 for the Founders Day celebration. In his remarks to the guests that day, he honored our Association for "its significant contributions in servicing the needs of its members and to the social, cultural, civic and economic well-being of the Pittsburgh community.” He once said one of his major goals was to restore pride in the city. He did that . . . and so much more. We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife, Jeanne, and his sons, Gregg and David. May he rest in peace. below: 0001 0008 0010 0013 0014 0015 0016 0017 0018 0019 0024 0026 We ask our fellow members to pray for the eternal rest of our recently departed members listed 0028 MAY 1988 BRIDGEPORT.
