On April 16 in New Brunswick, N.J., family and friends of the William Penn Association gathered to honor those individuals from the New Jersey branches who were recendy elected to serve the Association. We, at Branch 22, were especially proud because two of our members were being honored: Zoltán B. Emri, national vice president and Dale A. Cole, member of the national auditing committee. Congratulations guyswe’re proud of you! Following a few short speeches from members of the official family and a fabulous dinner, we were all greatly entertained by the William Penn dancers from Branch 18 Detroit. They were truly magnificent. The officers and members of Branch 22 would once again like to congratulate all the newly elected officials of the Association and wish them all the very best of success. We are happy to report that National Vice President Zoltán Emri’s wife Audrey is recovering nicely from a recent heart attack, and wishes to thank everyone who was kind enough to send get-well wishes. Finally, we would like to remind all members that we continue to hold our monthly meetings on the fourth Tuesday of every month. Also, a reminder to everyone that cookbooks are still available from our branch. The price is $3.00 and they can be obtained by contacting any officer of Branch 22. Branch 27 Toledo, OH By Mary Ivancso Branch 27 Coordinator My, oh, my — did we have a busy month. I missed the deadline for the May issue because Steve and I were in New Brunswick, N.J., at the time. It was so gratifying to hear that our readers missed my column. On April 8 we attended an informal dinner-dance at Branch 18’s William Penn Social Club. Dr. Jeno Rande, general secretary of the World Federation of Hungarians in Budapest was honored that night. National President Stephen G. Danko presented Dr. Rande with a beautiful plaque. In April, on our way to New Brunswick, we visited my relatives in Windber, Pa. My nephew, Steve Gall Jr. (son of the late "Muzzy” and Katy Gall) showed us many trophies and awards his children had earned. Bernadette Gall received an MVP award from Windber High School for her accomplishments in track. Bobby Gall also has many trohies for football and baseball. Keep up the good work! Dottie made the best cheesecake. Suzie Walls came home to spend some time with us. And Caroline was busy with her homework. The dinner-dance in New Brunswick was a huge success. The food was delicious. Honored that night were National Vice President Zoltán B. Emri, Chairman of the Board Joseph Arvay, National Directors Michael Hrabar and Frank Radvany, National Auditor Dale Cole and Advisory Board member Michael Hegedűs. The Branch 18 Hungarian Dancers, under the direction of Darlene Szatmári, received a standing ovation for their performance. They also introduced a new dance that they had learned while they were in Hungary. Audrey Emri, wife of National Vice President Zoltán Emri, was hospitalized for a short while. Audrey — for the life of me — I just can’t picture you as a patient in any hospital. Get well soon. Congratulations are in order for Alice Horvath who was unanimously elected president of St. Stephen’s Rosary Altar Society. Congratulations are also in order for William "Fundi” Szirotynak who was elected commander of Birmingham’s VFW Post 4906. Fundi came over the other day and tilled my small garden. Now, I will have tomatoes, green peppers and hot peppers for our szalona sutes in the fall. Thanks, Fundi. Paul Lajti knocked on my door one morning and said, "Mary, do you need any saffron?” Wow, did I? Paul gave me not only much saffron but also the precious seeds. Ernie and Sue Belegrin celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary May 30 at St. Stephen’s. The Rev. Martin Hamady, pastor of St. Stephen’s Church, will be celebrating his 40th year in the priesthood at a reception in his honor on June 12. We extend our condolences to the families of Eugene Hegedűs and Nándor Karafa. Enough for now. Please call me at 691-9641 — I’m always happy to hear from all of you.
