October 1988, William Penn Life, Page 5 Branch 13 Trenton, NJ By Elsie H. Radvany Branch 13 Secretary The grand ballroom of the Hungarian Reformed Church was the scene of a very happy occasion. Branch Treasurer Anthony C. Beke and his wife Marguerite celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. The Rt. Rev. Dr. Andrew Harsanyi, Bishop of the Hungarian Reformed Church of America, performed the renewal of the wedding vows. Anthony and Marguerite have three sons, Steven, Brian, and Karl. Many friends and relatives rejoiced with the happy couple, congratulating them and wishing them continued health and happiness in the future. In other news, Lee and Arlene Gordon announced the birth of a son, Michael Steven, on Aug. 3. Michael is the grandson of Branch President Frank J. and Elsie Radvany. Congratulations to the proud family. Michael Steven will soon become a member of the William Penn Association like his brother and sister. For servicing your insurance needs, please contact Elsie H. A graduate of Kenston High School in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, John operated his own catering business, La Mraz Catering Co., prior to entering the Culinary Institute. He also worked at the Chagrin Valley Country Club and for Executive Caterers. He is the son of Branch members Mr. and Mrs. John Mraz Sr. Branch 24 Chicago, IL By Betty Akai Branch 24 Reporter After a long, hot summer Branch 24 will hold its next regular monthly meeting at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 9, at the Ivanhoe Park Fieldhouse, 144th Street and Stewart in Riverdale. Following the meeting refreshments will be served. We ask all our fellow branch members to please join us at this meeting and take part in planning the fraternal activities of our branch. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Helen Kaluczky Branch 28 Reporter Look back on September and remember — the welcome rains that brought relief to our part of the country and the fraternal activities in which we joyfully participated throughout both rain and sunshine. We just hope the other parts of the country also receive such a blessing, but not in the form of a "Florence” or a "Gilbert”; just szép csendes eso. The Hungarian language and arts and crafts have always gone well through the months and years, rain or shine, under the leadership of people such as Vera Gabrick. She helped form the American Hungarian Cultural Association Inc. when to be an "ethnic” was not very popular. Yet she and others persisted, and we can thank her and many others too numerous to mention for keeping our Hungarian culture alive. The Cultural Association met mostly at the Franciscan Monastery on South Belle Vista Avenue in Youngstown, and taught the younger ones. After one recent Hungarian language session, Vera was thrilled to hear the young ones greet them with "jo napot kívánok” and say that they have learned quite a bit. Referring to the Franciscans, they recently celebrated a nostalgic event at their shrine, Our Lady of Csiksomlyo. Since St. Stephen of Hungary dedicated his crown and homeland to Our Lady, we had two occasions to celebrate with the Franciscans. One was Our Lady’s birthdav on Sept. 9, and the other was the 950th anniversary of the death of St. Stephen on Sept. 11. Yes, our spiritual heritage is also alive and well. Materially, we can aid our fellow Hungarians as did the American-Hungarian Federation of Churches and Societies. They recently donated $1,000 to help those Hungarians displaced from Erdély, Romania. They are to be thanked for their generosity and support to those who have suffered much. Our own William Penn Association has established its own fund to aid these refugees. We encourage all our members to donate to this worthy cause. We also extend thanks to all those William Penn members who attended the annual Family Festival in Wellsburg, W.Va. Branch 28 was well-represented by our president and his wife, Steve and Peg Sándor, as well as our Recording Secretary Irene Nemeth. Too bad we didn’t win any prizes with our donations, but you can’t have everything in this life. Máskor. Kay Sabo and Mary Strichek JOHN MRAZ, JR. have moved out of Branch 28 and into Florida territory. We miss them, and they miss us. Send them a note at their new address: 8961 S. Hollybrook Blvd., Building 37, Apt. 110, Pembroke Pines, Fla. 33025. For your insurance needs, call Gabe Nameth at 792-8145 or Alan Szabó at 792-7851, and make their day. Branch 129 Columbus, OH By Frank A. Peterfy Branch 129 President Branch 129 held its annual summer picnic on Sunday, Sept. 11, at The Dispatch Country Club in Columbus. About 200 adults and children attended the picnic on a beautiful, sunny day. The temperature was in the mid-70’s, permitting the children to enjoy the many outdoor activities. Food and drinks were provided by Branch 129, and the members brought covered dishes and good Hungarian pastries. A drawing was held and the following won prizes: Linda Tokár, Debbie Vecchiarelli, Margaret Taukovich, and Nancy Madsen. Alex Sepos won the 100th Anniversary Commemorative Plate that was provided by the Home Office. A great time was had by all who attended. Don’t forget — the Christmas party will be held on Dec. 10 at the VFW Hall. More information on the Christmas party will appear in future reports. Branch 800 Altoona, PA By Harold E. Robinson Branch 800 Reporter Branch 800 held its annual corn boil and wiener roast on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at Highland Park in Altoona. We were able to get fresh corn even though it was scarce because of the drought. Everyone had a good time, and we had plenty of com and wieners and other food and drink. The committee which organized this annual affair deserves a vote of thanks. It is hard work getting Branch News Joe Polumbo, a member of the organization committee for Branch 800’s recent com boil and wiener roast, looks as if he could use an extra hand. everything ready. There was a good crowd of adults and children on hand. The children were entertained with games and a penny scramble. Our branch held its regular meeting on Sept. 6 at Our Lady of Lourds Church hall. We decided to hold a Thanksgiving Mass. It was also decided by ballot to discontinue the light lunch that we held after our meetings.
