Branch 249 holds 1987 awards dinner DAYTON, OH — Branch 249 held its annual Awards Dinner on April 4 at St. Stephen’s Hall. Trophies were presented to the many members of our branch bowling league who qualified for this distinction. Also honored were 50-year members Mrs. Julia Boston and Mrs. Irene Hoffman. They receiv­ed the appropriate lapel pin in commemoration of their long membership in our Association. The Illustrious Member citat­ion was bestowed upon several members who have served in an official capacity at our branch for many years of dedicated service and loyalty. They were Branch President John Motko, Vice President Steve Horvath, Auditor Frank Hoffer, Auditor Michael Mayerchak and retired Secretary-Treasurer Anne Kertesz. We congratulate them all. Once again our bowlers and friends were to travel to the site of our national bowling tourna­ment via chartered bus. Five men’s teams and four women’s teams were to represent our branch. Our wishes go out to Steve Horvath, chief organizer for all the bowling arrangements, for a complete and speedy recovery following his recent surgery. Branch News In Brief Branch 8321 WINDBER, PA - Branch 8321 met April 26 at St. Anthony’s Church and discussed several projects at the church. Members discussed repairs to the church bell, the annual bazaar to be held in May, and the forming of a work detail at the cemetery. Branch 8222 PITTSBURGH — Branch 8222 held its regular meeting on April 23. Members listened to Elizabeth Stoner speak on Catholic Wo­men’s Day to be held May 30. The branch had Masses said for Joe Schonbachler and Vince Liebogott, both of whom passed away during the last few months. Among the branch’s recent charitable contributions were $ 100 to the Knights of St. George Home, $ 100 to St. James Church and $150 to Father Richard Wersing for his missionary work in Tanzania, Africa. Branch 8036 SCOTTDALE, PA — Branch 8036 held its regular meeting April 27 at St. John’s Church. The Altar Boy’s program at St. Joseph’s was set for June 14. The branch also donated $10.00 to­wards the Knights of St. George Home cable television campaign. COMING SOON The History of the William Penn Watch for installments in future issues of the William Penn Life Br. 800 plans bus trip to shrine More than 60 guests attended the Communion breakfast held recently by Branch 800, Altoona, at St. Catherine’s Church in Duncansville, Pa. Robinson Branch 800 Reporter ALTOONA, PA — At the April meeting of Branch 800, the mem­bers decided to continue to give an award to the student at Bishop Guilfoil High School who made the highest marks in religion. The branch had a good turn out for the Communion breakfast held after Mass at St. Catherine’s Church in Duncansville. Among the 61 guests in attend­ance were Branch President Joseph Masic, Vice President Leroy Douglas, Marshal Jim Stoner, Breakfast Committee Chairman Leo Long, Committee member Deacon Gene Nerle, and Father Myers, pastor of St. Catherine’s. At the May meeting the branch completed plans for a bus trip to the Blue Army Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima near Washington, N.J. The bus will leave Altoona at 6:00 a.m. and make a lunch stop near Lewistown, Pa., with dinner on the return trip. The branch also decided to have our regular picnic at High­land Park on Aug. 19. We also talked about having a bus trip to the Mount St. George Festival on Aug. 9. The branch’s sauerkraut dinner was rescheduled for Oct. 9. Br. 8121 has first meeting ST. MARYS, PA — After their first three meetings of 1987 were cancelled by bad weather, Branch­es 8121 and 8126 met for the first time this year on April 1. The two branches discussed a merging of their memberships and establishing joint records. Members also singed birthday cards and made favors for resi­dents at the Knights of St. George Home. On May 6, the branches met for Mass and a Communion break­fast. The members made plans to hold a picnic in July. A social with cake, coffee and games followed the business meeting. S.W. Penn District meets SCOTTDALE, PA — Members from branches in the Southwest Penn District gathered April 29 at St. John’s Church here. In attendance were representa­tives from Branches 8036, Scott­­dale; 8048, Latrobe, Pa.; and 8290 and 8291, Youngwood, Pa. During the meeting, members received an update on the tree planting project at Mount St. George. The also voted to donate $25.00 towards the acquisition of a cable television system at the Home for the Elderly. Members also discussed ways on how to get the district more actively involved in various pro­jects and programs. Kovach Branch 159 Coordinator PHOENIXVILLE, PA — Branch 159 sponsored an Easter Egg Coloring Contest this past Easter season. Posters were distributed to the children of Parkside United Church of Christ Sunday School. Jean Kane, superintendent of the Sunday School, picked out the winners. Prizes were given to the winners by Branch Coordinator William Kovach for the best colored Easter eggs.
