Page 4, William Penn Life, January 1987 National Officers witness installation of new ambassador WASHINGTON — Robié M. H. (Mark) Palmer was sworn in as the new U.S. Ambassador to Hungary during ceremonies on Nov. 26 in the State Department Building. The William Penn Association was represented at the ceremonies by National President Gay B. Banes, Executive Vice President John F. Kenawell and National Secretary E.E. Vargo. Mr. Palmer brings to his new position 22 years of experience in U.S. foreign relations. He majored in Soviet studies at Yale University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 1963. After working briefly at the New York Times and WNDT-TV, he joined the Foreign Service in 1964. Mr. Palmer has served overseas at the American embassies in India and the Soviet Union and as Counselor for Political Affairs in Yugoslavia. In the State Department he has worked on NATO security affairs, as a member of the Policy Planning Staff and as principal speech writer for Secretaries Rogers and Kissinger. He was director of an office in the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs dealing with a range of strategic nuclear, theater nuclear and conventional weapons issues primarily relating to the Soviet Union. He was given the Department’s Superior Honor Award for his work in this area. From 1980 to 1982 Mr. Palmer was First Deputy for Policy in the Bureau of European Affairs and then Deputy to the Under Secretary for Political Affairs. In his most recent position, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs, he was responsible for developing policies and managing U.S. relations with the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe and Yugoslavia. Hody wins sales contest PITTSBURGH — Alex Hody, manager of the Association’s New Brunswick, N.J., sales agency, finished first among all career agents in the recent Under 21 Sales Contest. Mr. Hody signed up 57 new juvenile members in the New Brunswick area during the contest period from Aug. 1 to Oct. 31, 1986. National Director Elmer Toth finished first among all part-time WPA sales department welcomes new agents PITTSBURGH — The William Penn sales force welcomed three new career agents to its ranks during the last quarter of 1986. The three are Ronald J. Jonas, Mark Lange and Larry G. Snyder. Mr. Jonas will work out of the Chicago agency under agency manager John Rafferty. Mr. Jonas brings with him 21 years of sales experience, 10 of which are in the insurance field. He began his insurance career with Standard American Life Insurance Co. in September 1974. He later earned membership to the President’s Club and Leaders Council award and became a district manager in 1979. A former student at Illinois State University, Mr. Jonas is active in the Chicago Association of Life Underwriters and the Buffalo Grove Recreation Association. He currently resides in Buffalo Grove. He has two sons, Michael and Matthew. Mark Lange has also joined the Chicago agency. He, too, began his insurance sales career with Standard American Life in 1971. He later worked for Metropolitan Life. He was a member of the President’s Club for seven years. Mr. Lange lives in Des Plaines, 111., along with his wife Carmella and their three children. The third new agent, Larry Snyder, has been assigned to the Pittsburgh-East agency under agency manager Dominic La Verde. Before joining the William Penn, Mr. Snyder worked for United Insurance Co. and American General Insurance Co. He is licensed in life and health insurance and annuities. He resides in Latrobe, Pa., with his wife Pamela and their son Lórin and daughter Linley. The Association also wishes to extend a belated welcome to Winfred Kipp who joined the sales force in January 1986. A native of Texas, Mr. Kipp is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire and has over 10 years of experience in the insurance sales field. He began his insurance career with Prudential Insurance Co. and later worked for Beneficial Trust and United Insurance. He is licensed in life and health insurance and annuities. Mr. Kipp lives in Murrysville, Pa. and has two children, Pamela and Kris, both college students in New England. President Banes later discussed U.S.-Hungarian relations with the new ambassador. Mr. Palmer expressed a strong desire and expectation that the William Penn Association would support the international scholarship and cultural exchange programs between the two nations. Among those to address the gathering for the swearing in ceremonies were U.S. Secretary of State George P. Schultz and Hungarian Ambassador to the U.S. Dr. Vencel Házi. The new amabassador expressed his hope that the William Penn Association would continue to support the cultural and educational exchange programs being conducted between the U.S. and Hungary. agents with 44 sales. Both men were awarded a 13-inch color television. Mr. Hody started his career with the William Penn as 1981 when he assumed the agency manager’s position in New Brunswick. He earned the Life Underwriting Training Council Fellow (LUTCF) designation in 1986. He ranks among the Association’s top sales producers and has qualified for the 1987 sales conference to be held in Toronto.
