In Memóriám CARDINAL LÁSZLÓ LEKAI Cardinal László Lekai, the primate of Hungary who was instrumental in building church-state relations in his country, died of a heart attack June 30. He was 76. He was the only Hungarian member of the College of Cardinals. Pope John Paul II called Cardinal Lekai a "studious pastor bishop” and praised him for promoting the study of theology among the laity. Cardinal Lekai was born in Zalalovo, Hungary, in 1910. He was ordained a bishop in 1972 and named administrator of the Diocese of Veszprém. In 1974 he was named apostolic administrator of the Estergom Archdiocese. He became archbishop of Esztergom in 1976 and was named a cardinal later that year.
