Don’t Miss This Great Opportunity! By Barbara Botkin National Director The Second Annual William Penn National Golf Tournament will be held in Canton, Ohio on Saturday, July 13 and it promises to be even bigger and better than our first outing a year ago. And the reasons are many. The day’s events will include prizes galore for golfers and dinner guests. And this year’s tourney will include a free golf clinic under the direction of PGA professional Les Botkin. Tournament play will be at the beautiful Skyland Pines Golf Club at a cost of just $25 per play, a bargain when you consider the fee includes 18 holes of golf, a motorized cart, snacks and beverages on the course, favors on No. 1 tee, a videotape film of the golfers to be shown at the cocktail party, a golf clinic at the Skyland driving range and probably the most fun you’ll have playing golf all summer. The day’s events will begin promptly at 9 a.m. The Sheraton Beiden Inn will provide hotel accommodations at a discount rate of $47 a night for single, or double occupancy. The Sheraton will also be the site of the awards banquet and is located just 10 minutes from the Skyland Pines Golf Club. Tournament play will begin at 10 a.m. just after the conclusion of the golf clinic. Assigned starting times will be mailed to each entrant. Golfers are invited to arrange their own foursomes, or the committee will make pairings in your behalf. Scoring for the tournament will be by the Calloway system. Prizes will be awarded to a large number of participants with lowest net scores. Prizes will also be given for closest to the pin, longest drive, shortest drive and longest putt. Scores of door prizes will be given during the banquet. Non-golfers are especially invited and encouraged to attend the banquet. A cash bar will begin at 6 p.m. at the Sheraton with dinner to be served at 7 p.m. The dinner will be a smorgasbord of steamship round of beef, roasted chicken, au gratin potatoes, rice piláf, vegetable du jour, assorted salads, rolls, jellos, fruit pie cobbler and beverage. The dinner will cost just $16 per person including tax and gratuity. The National Golf Tournament will be hosted by the Alliance Branch 189. Some of the committee members include Mike Duruttya, Zoltán Cibulas, Karl and Dorothy Trumpeter and John and Ann Barany. Co-administrators of the tournament are National Director Barbara Botkin and her husband, Les, a PGA golf professional and head pro at the Youghiogheny Country Club in McKeesport, Pa. On Friday evening, the day before the tournament, the Alliance committee invites everyone to have dinner at its William Penn Club. The branch committee also plans a hospitality room at the Sheraton Beiden Inn that same evening. The National Officers and Board of Directors are hopeful all members will make a serious effort to attend this second annual event and bring along family and friends. The tournament is open to all members and friends, men and women. And don’t forget the area is replete with exciting places to visit, including Canton, Ohio, home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the Hoover Historical Center, a Monument to William McKinley, Classic Car Museum, Glamorgan Castle, McKinley Museum of History, Science And for those with a special affinity for shopping, a convenient Beiden Village Mall is situated just across the street from the Sheraton Beiden Inn. A shuttle bus, at no charge, travels back and forth from the Inn to the Mall. The Inn has indoor and outdoor pools, a whirlpool and sauna, a universal fitness room and an electronic game room.
