Announcing the First William Penn National Golf Tournament continued success of that District's support for the Chaplains at the Huntington Correctional Institution and the Blair County Jail. They also have expanded this support to the Chaplain at the area hospitals. Other District reports were given by Chuck Gateman, Clarion; John Krohn, Philadelphia; Toni DeFalco, Ohio Valley; and Dolores Orlani, Southwest Penn. Betty Lana, Baltimore District, and Nartz Gajewski, Home Administrator, shared birthdays that weekend and were presented with a cake. Special Donations to the Home were made by Clarion and Southwest Penn. Districts. At the conclusion of the conference, those in attendance contributed a total of $100.00 toward the purchase of Chapel fans in the name of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart who have served our Home for so many years. Executive Vice President, John F. Kenawell and all in attendance hailed the conference as a great success. John F. Kenawell, right, and Co-Chairman Peter C. Kuhn, left, take a break from the busy weekend activities. The first William Penn National Golf Tournament and Dinner will be on Friday, July 13, 1984 at the Youghiogheny Country Club in McKeesport, Pa. The event is being planned by Co- Chairmen Barbara and Les Botkin. Mrs. Botkin is a member of the Board of Directors of the William Penn and Mr. Botkin is a Class (A) PGA Golf Professional at the Youghiogheny Country Club. In addition to the Botkins, the Committee for this event is comprised of local members of the Board of Directors, including Bill Kohut, Roger Nagy and Elmer Toth as well as the National Officers. The day of golf will begin at 1 1:30 a.m. with assigned starting times for each foursome. Players may make up their own foursome or foursomes will be arranged for them. Players are requested to submit a handicap from their local golf course verified by a golf professional or pro shop manager. Those players without a handicap may enter the tournament and their net scores will be handicapped according to the Calloway System. The number of prizes awarded will be determined by how many people enter the tournament. There will be no team prizes, only individual. Prizes will be awarded also for closest to the pin and longest drive on four holes. Last year 55 players entered a local William Penn Golf Tournament sponsored by Branch 226 in McKeesport and planned by the Botkins in which $1,000 worth of prizes were awarded to approximately half of the entrants. The number of prizes will be increased with increased participation. There will also be door prizes awarded to dinner guests. In the event of a prolonged rain storm with lightning under which conditions it would be impossible to play, alternate plans are being formulated to still carry on the festivities on July 1 3 and award the prizes. The entry fee for the Golf Tournament which covers a round of golf, carts, tips, and snacks on the golf course, is set at $35. The dinner will be a Gourmet's Delight! An elegant buffet featuring prime rib, stuffed chicken breasts, seafood newburg, and a full salad bar with at least nine different salads, and a dessert bar with numerous temptations to delight your palate. Price is just $ 1 7. Dinner attire will be casual. Players may use the locker room facilities after golf to shower if they so desire. Hotel accomodations will be made for you at the Howard Johnson's in Monroeville, Pa., 25 minutes from Youghiogheny. Hotel room rates will be $42 for a single and $48 for a double. (Note from Director Barbara Botkin) I encourage all of you who enjoy playing golf, no matter what your caliber of play, to enter our First National Golf Tournament sponsored by the Board of Directors. The Youghiogheny Country Club Golf Course is one of the finest in the Tri- State area, plush and beautifully wooded. I know you'll enjoy it immensely. (Even if you do lose a ball or two to the woods!) For those of you who would like to bring your families to the Golf Tournament, the pool at Youghiogheny will be available for your enjoyment at a charge of $2.00 per person. You may also play tennis for a fee of $3.00. We hope you will encourage your family and friends to participate with you in the tournament. They need not be members to play.
