The year of 1984 has begun with a gala New Year’s Eve party at the Social Club. Needless to say, to those that attended, it was one of the best New Year’s Eve parties we have had. The orchestra, food and the people were the greatest! We have elected the following officers to serve you in the coming year: President, Stephen Danko; Vice Presidents, Andrew Toth and Stephen P. Danko; Treasurer, Betty Holguin; Secretary, Mathilda Jagadics; Controller, James Burinda; Auditors, Betty Kocsis, James Lochinger, Joseph Soter, Frank Tima and John Ulics; Fraternal Co-ordinator, Darlene Szatmári. Congratulations to our officers are extended to each of you from all of us at Branch 18. Our annual “Champagne Ball” was held on Saturday, February 11th. Music was by Joseph Balint and his orchestra. Those who attended had a great time listening and dancing to the music of Joe. The food, as always, was excellent and the entertainment was enjoyed by all. The William Penn Dancers performed in great spirit. The little ones (three year olds) were very enthusiastic. Many thanks to Darlene Szatmári for her great effort and leadership shown to the dancers. The William Penn Branch 18 is planning another trip to Toronto in April. If interested, please call Darlene Szatmári for your reservation. It will indeed be a fun weekend. It will be Friday, April 6th to Sunday, April 8th. (3 days and 2 nights). We will travel from Windsor by train and hotel accommodations will be at the beautiful Royal York Hotel, plus a tour of the City of Toronto. The price of the total package trip is $115.00 per person, based on double occupancy. We wish to express our sympathy to the family of Irene Gall, on the loss of her husband, Joe. Please accept our condolences, Irene. We all miss Joe. We also wish to extend our congratulations to the Danko family. Our National Chairman of the Board, Stephen G. Danko is the proud father of a bouncing baby boy, Derek Stephen. Congratulations to Steve and his lovely wife, Donna. We know Julia and Steve, the proud grandparents are beaming with delight, as well as the aunt and uncle, Darlene and Steve. Congratulations to all of you! At this writing, I wish to advise that our annual Bowling Tournament will Branch 18 Detroit, Michigan be held in Columbus, Ohio, so please start getting your teams organized. The time will soon be here! Remember, if you have any news, please contact the writer at 291-2882. Congratulations to Ronald and Laura Molnár on the birth of their son Leslie. Grandma Mary Molnár is smiling when she tells us she is a grandmother again. God Bless Leslie and his loving family. That is all for now. Respectfully submitted, Betty Holguin Branch 18 Treasurer Branch 18 Ladies Auxiliary The Ladies Auxiliary held their election of officers at their December 1983 meeting. Our new officers for 1984 are: President, Eleanor Kender; Vice President, Anne Leny; Secretary, Louise Vespremi; Treasurer, Margaret New; Auditors, Mary Boka and Mary Gebnar. On behalf of the Ladies Auxiliary we wish to thank Darlene Szatmári for being our President for one year and a job well done, but being active in other organizations she had to give her job up and also Jolán Lucas who was our Treasurer for many years, but due to transportation reasons and moving she could not attend the meetings regularly. Jolán did a fine job but will continue being with us whenever possible. November 12th was our day working at the Veterans Hospital in Allen Park, the veterans enjoyed playing bingo and our contributions were greatly appreciated and a very nice letter of thank you was written to the ladies for their appreciation. Workers were Darlene Szatmári, Eleanor Kender, Louise Vespremi and Betty Moro. Our annual Christmas party was held on December 18th at the Social Club. Good food was prepared by Mr. Steve Szatmári, total of 58 were attending. Thanks Mr. Szatmári for the special punch and service. Many laughs were heard after our President Darlene Szatmári dressed up as Santa Claus and her helper Secretary Louise Vespremi carried on in Hungarian Hideg Van a North Pole Ban, Santa answered Nagyon Hideg Van. Our audience was laughing and then all the ladies had to sit on Santa’s lap to get their Christmas present. A nice necklace was given to all of our members. With our sick Betty Soltész, Cecelia Vespremi, Kathleen Almandy, Margaret Benke and Mary Kato and also Helen Torok. Get well cards and speedy recovery to these ladies and they are at this writing improving. Was nice to see Cecelia Vespremi and Betty Soltész at our Christmas party feeling much better after having surgery. Century Pay Off Steve Danko, president of the William Penn Association, Downriver branch, present a $1,000 check for an insurance-policy payoff to former Lincoln Parker Mrs. Helen Nemes, 99 years old, at a recent luncheon in her honor at the William Penn Hungarian Club in Lincoln Park. Mrs. Nemes, who purchased the policy in 1906, has outlived the insurance mortality table, Danko said. Looking on are James Burinda (left), branch controller, and Andy Toth, vice president. The honoree, now a Grosse Pointe resident, is the grandmother of Evelyn Cairns, Melius associate editorial director/Lifestyles editor. 18
