William Penn Life, 1983 (18. évfolyam, 1-4. szám)

welcoming address by Elmer W. Toth, Branch Manager of Br. 89. We continued with the singing of carols and then the “Amazing Doc” entertained all with his many magical tricks. He kept the children, as well as the adults, in awe and had several children from the audience assisting him. The audience enjoyed him immensely. Then the long awaited visit from “Santa” came accompanied by the cheers of the children. Santa visited in the audience before he started the distribution of the gifts which were a $2.00 bill and a box of candy to each child and a box of candy for each adult. The children were also treated to various snacks and orange drink. A buffet table of refreshments was set to everyone’s enjoyment. We truly feel that this affair was most successful and that a feeling of true friendship and togetherness prevailed. Those who were instrumental in making this party a success were: Roger and Donna Nagy, Mike and Zita Kara, Elmer and Ruth Toth, John and Elaine Toth, and George and Ann Walick. We, the Hungarian Ethnic Group of W. Pa., are proud to announce the third year of active and responsive continuation of TÁNCHÁZ ’83. Starting at 9:00 P.M., Saturday, February 26, 1983 at the Pittsburgh American Hungarian Social Club, 120 Flowers Avenue, (off of Second Avenue in Hazelwood), TÁNCHÁZ ’83 will expand beyond the International Folk Dance Record Hop with a Hungarian flavor—to the formation of the Ethnic Group’s Live Band and the showing of arts and crafts by artists working in folk art endeavors. In the future folk artists will regularly be featured in the art of dance as well as music. The direction is to serve the funloving folk enthusiast as well as to recognize and inspire the living folk art specialists to create new local folk art. TÁNCHÁZ '83 is living proof of folk cultural evolution with multi-ethnic levels as well as a FUN place to become exposed to many ethnic specialists who love what they are doing. TÁNCHÁZ, or dance house, is a gathering of the village, particularly in Szék, (a part of Transylvania in Hungary) youth. Traditionally, organized by the oldest males, who would rent a very large living room in someone’s home, then gather all their friends for the sake of sharing the conviviality of old and newly acquired folk dances and costume motifs. There is usually a fine band and good food contributed by everyone. There will be a quarterly Program Book published featuring advertisers and articles about aspiring ethnic artists, ethnic cooking, arts and crafts. Chef and pastry artists will present a “Tidbits for Tasting” on Saturday, March 26, 1983 at 9 P.M. Future dates will be: April 30, 1983; May 21, 1983 is the Third Annual Mayor’s City Heritage Parade at 10:30 Á.M.; May 27, 1983—after Folk Festival beginning at 11 P.M.; June 25, 1983 and July 30, 1983. If this appeals to you, come tq the village and let’s make TÁNCHÁZ a tradition in Pittsburgh.
