On behalf of the officers and members of William Penn Branch 18 and Social Club, we wish to “WELCOME BACK” Steve Szatmári after his recovery from open heart surgery. We all missed him and are sincerely thankful to have him back. I also believe Steve has missed everyone and is glad to be back. We wish to thank Steve Varga for the excellent job he did in organizing our recent Golf Tournament. But of course, Steve is a natural when it comes to organizing. The Women’s Division winner was Olga Burinda and in the Men’s Division, the winner was Jim Burinda. Congratulations Olga and Jim. That’s what I call “All in the Family”. I am sorry we cannot give you much information on our National Bowling Tournament winners. A few of our members received checks and/or trophies, so I’ll mention those that I know. Perhaps by our next issue, we could give a more detailed report. 1st Place Women’s Doubles: Betty Holguin and Linda Mastro. Linda Mastro also came in 17th place in Women’s Singles and 6th place in all events. 1st Place Women’s Singles: Mary Ecsedi. Mary also came in 4th place in all events. 19th Place Women’s Singles: Marge Szalai. 2nd Place Men’s Singles: Steve Szalai. 21st Place Men’s Singles: Reydesel Holguin. Rey’s team also came in 13th place with his team; John Molnár, Steve Szalai, Andy Chesley and Pat Mastro. Speaking of bowling ... are you interested in bowling every other Sunday Branch 18 Detroit, Michigan at Thunderbowl? If you are, please call Ernest Ecsedi at 676-1835. We wish to extend our congratulations to our new officers of Wm. Penn Bowling League #1 as follows: President, Ernest Ecsedi; Vice-President, Steve Honto; Secretary, Marge Szalai; Treasurer, Marge Heller. Our most popular dinner at the Club is the “Wooden Platter”. The most recent one on August 21st was a “sell out”. In fact, they always are. If you missed this one, hope to see you at the next one. How would you like us to take the worry of where to go for your birthday or anniversary? Well, starting September 18th, and every third Saturday of each month, we will hold a dinner with live music to help celebrate your birthday, anniversary or perhaps for a friend. A small gift will be given to the celebrant. So, if you have a birthday or anniversary coming up in September, for your family or friend, please make your reservations now. Remember . . . every third Saturday of the month, we will have dinner and dancing for the celebrant and their family and friends. Please take note of these upcoming events: September 27: Card Party at the Social Club. $3.00 per person—coffee, dessert and many prizes. October 16: Annual “Szüreti Bal”— Make your reservations early. Call any officer, or Steve at the Club. October 30: Halloween Party. Get your costumes ready and start practicing the Broadway Acts for the “Gong Show”. This was such a success, that we decided to do it again, by popular demand. We are glad to see Ernie Ecsedi up and around after his recent operation. Just proves, “you can’t keep a good man down.” He is already getting plans set for his golfing days, before the cold weather sets in. John Kender is still hospitalized at Beaumont Hospital. He would greatly appreciate your “Get Well” cards. Our big 50/50 winner, that was drawn at our National Bowling Tournament dinner was Steve P. Danko, winning $1,000.00. I understand that Helen and John are making plans to spend some of that loot. Our family picnic brought out many families, even though we had a bit of rain. It was held at Lower Huron Valley Park in Flat Rock. The “Goulash” made by our Chief Cook, Mr. Macker, was excellent and of course it wouldn’t be a real picnic for most of us if we did not have our traditional bacon fry. All in all—a good time was had by all. Remember... if you have any news of any events, sickness, births, birthdays, please call me at 291-2882. Remember, this is your newspaper, and we need your happenings to make it more interesting. That is all the news I have at this time, so until the next issus, I remain, Fraternally yours, Betty Holguin, Treas. *** William Penn Branch 18 Dancers Our dancers have been very busy this summer with performances at the Hungarian Festival in Wyandotte, in Flint for the Blessed Sacrament Church Festival where the dancers really enjoyed themselves. They also did a benefit for the Veterans at the Veterans Hospital in Allen Park. It was a great pleasure for our group. They recently performed at the Grape Festival “Szüreti Bal” at the Wyandotte Yack Arena, sponsored by the Hungarian Club of Detroit. The group is also sponsoring a drawing for the William Penn Social Club’s Szüreti Bal, October 16th. A beautiful 36" doll dressed in a traditional red, white and green costume made by Darlene Szatmári is the prize. Get your tickets to help this group in their drawing. The dance group will hold their annual Christmas Card Party on Monday, November 29th at 7 P.M. at the Social Club. Many Christmas prizes will be awarded to the lucky card players. See you there.
