First Mixed Golf Tournament Sponsored by Branch 18 Sunday, June 29th dawned with a beautiful day in store for the approximately 45-50 golfers participating in the First Annual Mixed Golf Tournament, sponsored by Branch 18. Approximately eleven or twelve foursomes showed up and once they began teeing off, they took their turns in rapid succession. This was not only our First Tournament, but the first one in which our very popular and ever-young past National President, Julius Macker, also participated.. He wasn’t going to let any of those young “whipper-snappers” get by him, no siree. The course was a beautiful one, with long and wide fairways. The back nine was about 500 yards shorter—a lucky break—because along about that time all the ‘walking’ golfers were beginning to feel tired and ready for a ‘cool one’. There were a few dark clouds overhead toward the last few holes and a drop or two off rain, but nothing threatening. After the golf tournament, the golfers, tired but happy, hungry and thirsty, were treated to a delicious family-style dinner at the William Penn Hungarian Social Club, consisting of roast chicken, stuffed cabbage, mashed potatoes, string beans, salad, coffee and dessert. During this social hour, there were many comparisons of scores and a lot of “if onlys”. Also, we were very lucky to be entertained by the fine piano playing of Fred Archer, one of our newer members. It turned into a regular song-fest with many participating. After dinner, Andy Toth, Chairman of the Golf Committee, took the floor and thanked all the members and their guests for making our first outing such a huge success. He also thanked his committee members, S. P. Danko, Steve Vargo, and Joe Rist for their help in working out the details of the Tournament. He then turned the floor over to Steve Vargo who had been adding and subtracting back and forth until he was sure of the winners. He did a terrific job in getting all the scores together on a large cardboard for everyone to examine. Steve then announced the winners, who were John Skirpan in the Men’s Division and Dorothy Csanyi in the Women’s Division. It was indeed a very pleasant and happy surprise for your writer to be declared a winner of our very first golf tournament, and I have decided to donate my trophy to the Social Club for display purposes in commemoration of our first outing.
