William Penn Life, 1979 (14. évfolyam, 1-4. szám)
1979-04-01 / 2. szám
The “Szüreti Bal” was a great success. Dinner, dancing to the music of Joe Balint and his orchestra, being entertained by our Young Hungarian Dancers and Musicians was a treat to everyone. December 9th, the Social Club held a Christmas Bazaar and Bake Sale. Many beautiful items were made by the ladies in their craft classes and sold for a reasonable price. Our famous Hungarian pastries made by our William Penn Dancers and members of Branch 18 were sold rapidly. Everything went so fast, that some people who arrived in the early afternoon, were disappointed. Later in the evening, our most popular dinner, the “wooden platter” was a complete sell out. Steve Szatmári, manager of the William Penn Branch 18 Social Club, really put his culinary art to work on this special meal. The next day, December 10th, the Annual Children’s Christmas Party was held at 3:30 P.M. at the V.F.W. Hall in Lincoln Park, Michigan. The program was provided by our own William Penn Dancers and band, and of course, best of all, to the children, the one and only Santa Claus. The children had a wonderful time, talking to him and receiving all their “goodies”. The adults also enjoyed refreshments and pastry. In accordance with provisions of the By-Laws, the following are the duly elected officers of William Penn Branch 18 for 1979: President, Stephen Danko; 1st Vice-President, Andrew Toth; 2nd Vice-President, Stephen P. Danko; Recording Secretary, Dorothy Chanyi; Treasurer, Betty Holguin; Auditing Committee: Mary Gebnar, Betty Kocsis, James Lochinger, James J. Lochinger, Robert Macker; Controller, James Katona. Congratulations to all of our elected officers. We hear these officers are busy planning an eventful year for Branch 18. Keep up the good work! The New Year’s Eve party was a great success. Tickets were sold in advance and we are truly sorry some of you wonderful people were unable to attend. Our Champaign Ball was held on February 10, 1979 at the Hungarian Reformed Church Hall in Allen Park. Music of Frank Borisz from Cleveland put many in a dancing and singing mood. The dinner prepared by Mary Gyorke, was excellent, as always. Reservations were made in advance and was a complete sell out before the end of January. We were honored to have, as our guests at the Champaign Ball, Kasnyik András, Consulate General of the Hungarian Peoples Republic from New York; Mr. Steve Szilagy, Vice President of Marketing from the Home Office; National Director, A1 Kertesz and his lovely wife together, with the Hungarian American Club of Dayton, Ohio. We also had our very good friend and member, Gideon Tukacs from Phoenix, Arizona. By popular demand, our Young Hungarian Dancers gave a brilliant performance. They have really put a lot of time into learning the traditional dances of Hungary, and it certainly showed in their performance. They have been asked to perform in Flint, Michigan in the near future. Many thanks to Darlene Szatmári and Debbie Gall for getting the group together and doing such an excellent job. We wish to thank all those who helped decorate the hall, namely: Mary Gebnar, Irene Gall, Eleanor Kender, Kathy and James Lochinger, Mrs. Kiss, Bill Kocsis, Betty and Rey Holguin, James L. Lochinger and all our Young Hungarian Dancers. Thanks also to Elvira and László Kubovics, Ann Leny and Betty Kocsis for their assistance at the dinner line. Thanks to Eleanor and Frank Kender, Betty and Rey Holguin and Dorothy Csanyi, who did an excellent job in seating our guests. Thanks to all who helped make this ball a success and especially to all those who attended. Mackers, Vargas, and Dankos arrive at Korsuth Hall in Miami, Florida. Vacation is the key word at Branch 18, especially since the cold weather has really taken its toll with many of us. Elvira and László Kubovics went on a Caribbean cruise. Now that is the way to go! They had a really nice time, just relaxing and taking in all the sights and events. Betty and Bill Kocsis took their vacation in Hawaii, under the beautiful palm trees and the balmy Hawaiian music. They just came back and in a matter of a week, Betty was jetting down to Florida. Nice way of keeping warm Betty. Speaking of Florida, our president, Stephen Danko and wife Julia also went to Florida and visited with Mr. Juluis Macker, former National President of the William Penn Association and his wife. While they were there, they met our National Vice-President of William Penn Association, Mr. Louis Varga and his wife. What a nice way to spend your vacation. Julia Danko decided to extend her vacation, but Stephen Danko had business back in Detroit, so he had to return after a week. But at this writing, he will be going back on March 14th to “soak” in the sunshine. Valerie Varga from Bridgeport, Julia Danko from Southgate, Mrs. Radvany from Trenton, IM.J. SOCIAL EVENTS: March 3—our young members had a “Disco Night”. The turntable began rolling at 9:00 P.M. along with hamburgers and french fries, as a light snack. However, a full course meal was available before 9:00 P.M. March 8—a roast duck dinner was served at 6:00 P.M. March 17—a St. Patrick’s Day Celebration. Our favorite dish . . . the wooden platter. March 24—the William Penn Hungarian Social Club celebrated their third anniversary with a dinner-dance. Music was provided by Joe Balint and his orchestra and entertainment by the William Penn Dancers. REMINDER: The Club is open for lunches from 11:30 A.M. on as well as for dinner, Tuesday thru Sunday.
