Minutes of The Board of Directors Quarterly Meeting

Minutes Of The Second Quarterly Meeting Of The Board Of Directors Of The William Penn Association Held On June 13-15 In The Board Room Of The Home Office, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

1) Vice President Louis L. Varga announced that in the absence of the National President and Chairman of the Board, Elmer Charles, National Vice President John P. Balia will act as Board Chairman until the return of Mr. Charles.

2) Vice President John P. Balia thanked Vice President Varga for the privilege of chairing the meeting. He announced that National President, Mr. Elmer Charles, is absent because he is

In addition to the scholarship fund, on a national basis a bowling tournament and fellowship day usually take place on Memorial Day weekend. Wukovits notes the event is in Washington, D.C., this year. The local club has four bowling lanes, and leagues occupy the alleys six nights a week. Locally, the fraternal group has a Christmas party for children under 12 and sponsors junior bowling leagues and. a teen-age softball league.

The Branch mourns the loss of one of its pioneer members, Joseph Szalai, who for many years was an active officer of the Branch serving as its President for many years. Despite his advanced age of 90 he frequently attended meetings and was always present for our social functions. Mr. Szalai was bom in Sonkád, Szatmar Megye, January 11, 1887, he lived 90 years. He passed away May 5, 1977. He retired from Duquesne Light Co., Colfax station in 1953.

The Branch paid its last respects Friday, May 6, where Mr. Elmer Charles, National President, gave the eulogy. Mr. Szalai is survived by Mrs. Elizabeth Medeja, Mrs. Margaret Mamros, Susan Szalai and Emery Szalai and five grandchildren. Julius Telegdy, Vice President of the Branch was his nephew.

Rev. Imre Kovács, Pastor United Church of Christ officiated at the funeral services.

The Branch held a successful szalona sutes at its last Branch meeting and plans are in the making for a good old fashioned summer picnic.

Somogyi who suffered a heart attack and is presently hospitalized. He asked each and everyone of us to remember him in our prayers and hoped for his speedy recovery.

Vice President Balia announced the following deaths:

Mrs. Florence Lovász, beloved wife of John L. Lovász, Home Office Employee.

Joseph Szalai, former Home Office Employee and Past President of Branch 296.

Our Branch Manager, George Charles, was recently hospitalized but is now well on the way to recovery.

Branch 296 again had the largest representation at the National Bowling Tournament.

The Branch Bowling League held its annual banquet at the “Bon-Fire Inn” with a nice turnout.

On June 11, 1977 the New England Fraternal Congress held their annual summer meeting in Woonsocket, Rhode Island at the Union-Saint-Jean-Baptiste Headquarters. I thought you might be interested in what transpired at this meeting. A portion of the time being donated to the Flag Day, a presentation of the American Flag was made to the Telestars Drum and Bugle Corp.

Ed Martel, president of U.S.J.B. was master of ceremonies with Adrien Bissonnette, president of Woonsocket City Council giving the Congress a welcome to his city, followed by the honorable Fernand St. Germain, United States representative from Rhode Island.

Proposed legislation in the state of Massachusetts had been discussed by Joe McVey, legal council for the New England Fraternal Congress, and new legislation in the state of Maine was discussed by Leo Gasselin, legal council for U.S.J.B.

We had a tremendous turn out with the presence of a few other Fratemals who were not present in the past. This was gratifying.

Acting Chairman John P. Balia officially calls the meeting to order. He requested the members to rise for the pledge of allegiance to the flag and invocation.

4) Vice President Louis L. Varga offered the invocation.

5) Secretary of the Board, Frank J. Radvany, called the roll and the following are present:

National Vice Presidents Louis L. Varga and John P. Balia; Directors Frank Bero, Zoltán B. Emri, Stephen Danko, Michael Hegedűs, Albert G. Kertész, William C. Kohut, Stephen Lang, Jr., Steve Lesco, Frank J. Radvany, John Sabo, Joseph Toma, Frank J. Wukovits, Sr., National Secretary Albert J. Stelkovics and General Counsel Gay B. Banes. Absent were National President Elmer Charles and National Treasurer Julius E. Somogyi.

6) The Agenda is adopted with the proviso that any matter properly belonging before the meeting may be added thereto during the course of the meeting.

7) Stephen T. Szilagyi, Vice President of Marketing, presented a very interesting and informative orientation on sales and marketing of our products. The Board acknowledged this information with sincere thanks and appreciation to Vice President Szilagyi.

8) National Secretary Albert J. Stelkovics read the Minutes of the Executive Committee meetings held on June 2nd and 3rd, 1977. The Board adopted same as a basis for further deliberations.

9) Vice President of Membership Services, Gus G. Nagy, submitted a preliminary verbal report on the 1977 Bowling Tournament and Scholarship Days held in Washington, D.C. on May 28th and 29th, 1977. He reported that the Tournament and Banquet was a huge success and everyone who attended was pleased with their accommodations and enjoyed a week end of fraternal fellowship. The Board wished to extend its sincere thanks and appreciation to the bowling tournament co-ordinators, Gus G. Nagy and Vice President John P. Balia, National Officers and various
