It’s silent and painless, but causes 20,000 deaths every year. What is this dreaded killer? Hyper­tension. Hypertension — or high blood pres­sure — causes more deaths in the Unit­ed States than the combined total of all highway and accidental deaths. But be­cause hypertension has no visible warn­ing symptoms, less than half of its vic­tims even know they have it. Even fewer are receiving adequate treatment for high blood pressure. Hypertension is blood pressure which is constantly elevated. Most hyperten­sion has no specific cause, but research­ers agree that obesity, stress, and ex­cess salt or fat in the diet are factors which increase the risk of high blood pressure.
