Hypertension — or high blood pressure — causes more deaths in the United States than the combined total of all highway and accidental deaths. But because hypertension has no visible warning symptoms, less than half of its victims even know they have it. Even fewer are receiving adequate treatment for high blood pressure. Hypertension is blood pressure which is constantly elevated. Most hypertension has no specific cause, but researchers agree that obesity, stress, and excess salt or fat in the diet are factors which increase the risk of high blood pressure.
