Mr. Elmer Charles, National President, called the Committee into session because of the reorganization of the Committee following the 1975 General Convention. Mr. Charles congratulates Ms. Nemeth and Ms. Beganyi on their election and states that he is very confident that the Committee will do their utmost to make a thorough audit of the William Penn Association records. He welcomes new member Charles Fabian to the Committee. Ms. Nemeth and Ms. Beganyi thanked the Committee and promised to keep harmony as the keyword in steering the Committee. Mr. Charles invited the Committee members to take part in the opening session of the quarterly Board meeting. Ms. Nemeth on behalf of the Committee expressed the joy of once again being together and sharing much camaraderie between the Board and the Auditing Committee. She wished everyone good health for the years to follow. Our Audit covered the period from July 1, 1975 to December 31, 1975. As members of the Auditing Committee, we certify that the following examination was made: (a) All disbursements were carefully checked, all cancelled checks against the vouchers and ledger sheets. (b) Deposits to all bank accounts were verified against the bank verifications. (c) The premium income accounts were thoroughly checked. (d) Income from Stocks and Bonds were all checked. The new purchases were all verified. The Committee went to the vault at Mellon Bank to count and check all the new purchases made during the six months under audit. These purchases were checked to the Annual Statement. The State Insurance Examiners had personally checked all securities the previous week. (e) Disability, Pension and Dividend Disbursements were examined and all agreed with the ledger. (f) The mortgage portfolio shows 5 new mortgages were granted. An Audit of the yearly branch reports shows a majority of branches participating in fraternal activities, such as Childrens Christmas parties, Szalona Sütés, card parties, Hungarian language classes. Many branches are sponsoring dinner dances, cook book sales, and $1.00 per member, per year drives for the benefit of the Scholarship Foundation. These activites all contribute to spreading fraternalism. Let us all continue to do our best to make William Penn Association the leaders. The Committee reviewed the 1975 Annual Statement and the Actuary’s Report. Both reports show that our Association is in a very sound position. The Administration is to be commended for their fine work. At the close of Audit the Committee met with National President, Elmer Charles, National Secretary, Albert Stelkovics, and National Treasurer, Julius Somogyi. Chairlady Ms. Nemeth thanked them and the Home Office employees for their kind consideration and cooperation during their Audit at the Home Office. Our examination was made in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards. The Committee wants to express their joy and sincere thanks for being invited to the Greater Pittsburgh Area Fraternal Banquet. It was a great honor as our National President, Elmer Charles was named Fraternalist of the Year. We were all so happy to be part of the celebration. Our congratulations to Mr. Charles, may the Dear Lord keep him in good health so he can continue to serve his fellowman. Respectfully submitted, Emma L. Beganyi _________________________________________ Secretary ELMER CHARLES... John Surovy, National Secretary of the National Slovak Society of America, selected ELMER CHARLES, our National President as the first “Fraternalist of the Year.” We of William Penn Association are mighty proud to know that others too recognized the valuable contribution Elmer Charles has made, first of all to his own Society and then to the fraternal benefit system as a whole. Mr. Joseph Miller in presenting the award to Mr. Charles said the following: “ Elmer Charles was 12 years of age when he came to America from a village in the County of Szatmar in Hungary in 1922. His desire was always to be a loyal American but he never lost his appreciation for the culture from which he came. This desire to hold fast to his Hungarian ancestry was what attracted him to join Branch 296 in Springdale, Pennsylvania, of the then Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association in 1935. It was in Branch 296 that the seed of fraternal leadership was nurtured and grew. Today, he is still an active member of this Branch. In 1939 Brother Charles was elected Branch Auditor and in 1942 became Branch Secretary. His Society recognized his leadership and his dedication; and in 1950 invited him to serve on the national staff as a Field Supervisor. Elmer Charles continued to make his leadership felt and in 1955 when William Penn Association was formed by a merger of Verhovay and Rákóczi Aid Association he became National Field Manager. Elmer Charles has served as National President of William Penn Association since 1963. He has never lost his concern for others and his sincerity of purpose; and these virtues have made him a dynamic leader. The Fraternal Benefits System itself has benefited from his leadership particularly in the legislative field where he has been instrumental in the development of a Uniform Fraternal Code. He has served both the National Fraternal Congress of America and the Pennsylvania Fraternal Congress, where he is currently a member of the Executive Committee. It is with a deep sense of pride that we confer the first “Fraternalist of the Year” award to a true fraternalist and a great American.” On Saturday, March 13, 1976, a Testimonial Banquet honoring Mr. Charles was held with more than 600 persons attending, to pay their respects to the Honoree. A fine program was arranged by Edward DePersis, Supreme Secretary Catholic Knights of St. George. National Anthem was led by Miss Helen Stipkovits, Branch 226, McKeesport, Pa.
