SCHOLARSHIP FUND NEWS Dr. Andrew Kovács, Director The William Penn Officers, Directors, Auditing Committee and the membership as a whole was saddened August 31, 1972 to learn that our esteemed Director, Dr. Andrew Kovács had unexpectedly died in his home at Rocky River, Ohio. Dr. Kovács was born in Pusztadobos, Szabolcs megye, Hungary, October 25, 1898. He came to the United States of America with his Parents at the age of 13. His father, like many other Hungarians, toiled in the coal mines and was a Verhovay member from the start. Dr. Kovács completed his university studies and in 1928 received his Medical Degree from the University of Cincinnati. He then studied at the University of Budapest and became an established surgeon, he practiced medicine for over forty years. He became a member and examining physician for Branch 45 in 1935. As a delegate to the 1947 Convention he was elected a member of the Board of Directors. In 1949 he was elected National Vice President which position he held until the merger. Dr. Kovács served on the Board of Directors of the Association for 25 years. During his membership on the Board, supervised the Verhovay Scholarship Loan Fund and was in contact with the students for many years. Professionally he was a member of the Cleveland Medical Society and served on the Staff of Grace Hospital, Fairmont Hospital for 40 years and for 29 years at the Lutheran Medical Center where earlier this year he was awarded a citation for meritorius service. There was no worthwhile Magyar cause which he did not support and took part in many community activities where the Magyar heritage could be enriched. During World War II as a captain in the Medical Corps he served his country and fellow men well. Dr. Kovács can best be characterized as one who was loyal. Loyal to his family, The William Penn Association has embarked on a fraternal activity, the Scholarship Grant program, the purpose of which is to aid our deserving members in completing their quest for a formal, higher education. From past experience we know that almost everyone who attends a college or university requires financial assistance in varying degrees. When the William Penn Board of Directors established the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation, Inc., the purpose was to afford as much financial assistance to those of our members who qualified, assistance not in the form of a loan, but as an outright grant. The number of grants and the amounts of grants are controlled by the number of dollars the Fund can generate on its invested assets. In the first year the grants amounted to $1,450.00. With the donations of our members and friends, we would like to considerably increase these grants. For this reason we are appealing first to all members who are in a position to become voting members of the Foundation. For a $100.00 minimum contribution one can become a voting member. Thereafter a minimum donation of $25.00 per year keeps the membership in full force. For a minimum donation of $25.00 one can become an Associate Member, with no voting rights. In the month of November we will enclose envelopes with the payment notices for the convenience of those who are willing to participate in this meaningful fraternal activity. Those who wish to contribute earlier should make checks payable to: WILLIAM PENN SCHOLARSHIP FUND and mail to 429 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15219. Each donor will receive an official receipt which can then be used for Federal Income Tax deduction verification. Our appeal is sincere and urgent, will you please help? The Foundation Board and the William Penn Board appeal to each Branch of the William Penn Association to become voting members of the Foundation. Those Branches which are not in the position to become voting members are requested to become Associate Members. Every little bit helps. All Branches of the William Penn are requested to organize Scholarship Chaphis profession, his country, his Association, his church and to his heritage. Dr. Kovács is survived by his wife Mrs. Andrew Kovács nee Margaret Buzas. The passing of Dr. Kovács has left a void in our midst. Although his jovial, kind and considerate presence will be missed, we will always remember him as a dynamic person who loved his William Penn Association and his Magyar people. ters in each Branch. The purpose of these chapters is to promote the Scholarship Foundation and its goals. It has been very effective with other fraternals who have Scholarship Chapters, therefore, we believe these Chapters could be the very group to carry out the goals and program of our scholarship program. We ask for everyone’s cooperation.
