Mr. Elmer Charles, National President, reported that two Branch Members were recently honored. Our congratulations to her. Louis Antal The Arnold, Pennsylvania Chamber of Commerce honored Louis Antal with its Humanitarian Award for the year 1970. Mr. Antal is President of his local, United Mine Workers Union and in recent District 5 United Mine Workers election was a candidate for President represent­ing the Miners for Democracy Organiza­tion. The Founding Fathers of our Associ­ation, 13 coal miners would be real proud to know that one of their decendants, a 1. The Board of Directors meeting was opened by National President, Elmer Charles. He extended warm greetings to the Board Members and National Officers for this first quarterly meeting of 1971. His opening remarks alluded to the memorable March 15th Independence Day for Hungary and the 85th Anniver­sary of the William Penn Fraternal Associ­ation. He expressed delight to see so many members of the official family in good health. President Charles reported that two Directors, namely Director Bero and Director Dr. Kovaos would be absent at roll call as they are ill and under doctor’s care. There is a possibility they may ap­pear later for the meeting should their condition improve. He wished them both a speedy recovery. President Charles stated the Spring Board Meeting is always an interesting meeting for it affords the opportunity to review the accomplishments of the past year, and prepare the ground work for future plans in advancing the growth of our Association. In referring to the 85th Anniversary of our Association, he re­called quite clearly the statements that were made at the 60th Anniversary of our Society, twenty-five years ago. The spirit and zeal that was generated at that oc­casion carried over to this anniversary member of our Association, is doing such humanitarian work to help his fellow coal-miners. Another outstanding member of the Branch, Rev. Imre Kovács, Pastor of United Church of Christ, was the princi­pal speaker at the Banquet honoring Mr. Antal. National President, Mr. Elmer Charles and Vice-President and Board Chairman, John P. Balia, represented the Home Office at the Banquet. The Branch extends its congratulations to both Sue Szalai and Louis Antal. Ten members volunteered their services to the Greater Pittsburgh Area Bowling Tournament Committee and more are available if needed. The Entertainment Committee is plan­ning a Summer Social event. This is to inform all members that we hold our monthly meeting every First Thursday of the month at the Branch Office at 200 Ontario Street, Buffalo, N. Y. from 7 to 9 P. M. He hoped many of those present now will be able to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of our Association. March 15th is Hungarian National Independence Day. President Charles paid tribute to those who died fighting for Freedom. He hoped and prayed that Freedom which is so dear to each and everyone will prevail. National President Charles, reported the deaths of the following: Illustrious Member, Balint Szabó, Branch 19, New Brunswick, New Jersey; Illustrious Member, Alexander Varga, Branch 44, Akron, Ohio; Illustrious Mem­ber, James Készéi, Branch 45, Cleveland, Ohio; Vincent Csehi, Manager Former Branch 564, Tiltonsville, Ohio; John Miranov, Manager Branch 348, Mona, West Virginia; Andrew Szeszak, husband of Mary Szeszak, New Business Depart­ment. In memory of our deceased members, the Board of Directors and National Offi­cers rose for a minute of silent prayer. Mr. Charles stated that he has request­ed Mr. Robert E. Bruce, Actuary, to ap­pear before the Board this date so dis­cussion may ensue on the Annual State­ment for 1970. He presented a full Agenda to the Board of Directors. 2. Chairman of the Board, John P. Balia, welcomed the Directors and National Officers. He was sorry to see the absence of two our Directors and hoped to see them among us soon. Chairman Balia stated we would review and evaluate the accomplishments of the past year and hoped that with harmony and under­standing the Board Members and National Officers will prepare our Society for the future. He requested the full cooperation of each member present. 3. Director Rev. Andrew P. Jacobs of­fered the invocation which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, followed by the Magyar “Hiszekegy”. 4. Secretary of the Board, Frank J. Radvany, calls the Roll and the following are present: Elmer Charles, National President, Louis L. Varga and John P. Balia, Vice Presidents, Directors: Stephen Danko, Michael Hegedűs, Stephen J. Ivancso, Rev. Andrew P. Jacobs, Stephen Lang, Jr., Julius Macker, Frank J. Rad­vany, Joseph Toma, Louis Vassy and Frank J. Wukovits, Sr., Albert J. Stel­­kovics, National Secretary and Julius E. Somogyi. National Treasurer. Gay B. Banes, General Counsel and Dr. Samuel C. Gomory, Medical Director. Absent due to illness were: Director Frank Bero and Director Dr. Andrew Kovács. 9
