Yes, it’s that time again — time for the bowling teams to plan the Memorial Day weekend in Toledo, Ohio — to be with our family — our big William Penn family — and friends . .. And Our Bowling Lanes what a weekend it will be! Preparations for the biggest and grandest, most fabulous Bowling Tournament is in the making! We are expecting teams from Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Wisconsin, New York and Connecticut for our 27th National Bowling Tournament and Fellowship Days on Saturday and Sunday, May 30th and 31st, 1970. The committee reserved 400 rooms for the Tournament participants at the Commodore Perry Motor Lodge. Our bowling alleys for the tournament are approximately 15-20 minutes from the hotel. Buses will depart beginning 8:00 A.M. Saturday morning and continue on until the last game is rolled. All those who would like to bowl on Friday night, may do so, by letting the committee know of their intentions. The Victory Dinner-Dance will be held Saturday at 6:00 P.M. in the famous Grand Ballroom. Dinner will be served promptly. The committee promises a short and very interesting program. Music will be furnished by the best Hungarian musicians the Frank Borisz orchestra and the modern dance music by John P. Veszpremi’s orchestra from Detroit, Mich. On February 21, 1970, the William Penn Fraternal Association will celebrate its 85th BIRTHDAY and we hasten to ask all our members, employees, officers and friends, to join in to commemorate this day as Scholarship Day. This year and every year in the “70’s” we want to dedicate our Founders’ Day to our YOUTH and designate it “Scholarship Day”. It is possible that the 70’s will go down in history as the decade of reforms and our youth, with our help, should be prepared to accept the challenge of “reform” and join us to develop better ways of managing what we have. On our 85th Birthday, we can proudly say that we are ready because we have in the past decade committed ourselves to a new beginning. We have computerized our Home Office operation for the sake of savings, efficiency and progress. The change made it possible in spite of . a iun-away inflation, to increase wages, provide broader fringe benefits and increase dividends for members having a dividend paying policy. The savings in the future makes it possible for us to declare a “termination dividend” for many of our 85 year old faithful members in our 85th year. No better way to say thank you for their loyalty than to say “YOU NO LONGER PAY.” As we reward our elders, we cannot forget our YOUTH. Our future lies in the hearts and minds of our young men and women. They must be loved, trusted and helped. The greatest help, after helping them to SECURITY, (life insurance) PROTECTION, (health insurance) is EDUCATION. Now we are prepared for this too. In 1969 the William Penn Scholarship Foundation was established by the Board Air view of Toledo, O., our Tournament City. National President Elmer Charles of Directors. It is chartered as a nonprofit foundation to provide financial help to our deserving young members so they can prepare for the exciting eighties and thrilling nineties. The aid that we will extend will help many a deserving young member to acquire the mental tools for a lifetime of successful, creative living and will also train and inspire our next generation of leaders. Who knows which one of these young scholars will be the next President of the William Penn Fraternal Association and express in service his gratitude to you for helping him to serve you. “On Founder’s Day, let us all pledge to support the Scholarship Foundation.” In the centerfold of this issue you will find a pledge card for your contribution. No matter how small it may be, it is the spirit that counts and a great spirit has a way of making every donation an important one. We know that our entire membership will want to support this new program collectively and individually. Let us remember that our youth is our greatest natural resource, to waste or preserve beyond our wildest expectation with EDUCATION. Please make your pledge and give to the “Scholarship Foundation.” ELMER CHARLES National President
