1 HOPE YOU CAN HOLD ON! National President's Message (Continued from Page 1) you, as we have done on so many previous occasions. Yes, we have demonstrated our fraternal spirit and good-will by the fact that we have always been the ones to initiate steps for closer rapprochement. We further demonstrated this in the field where we never disparaged the Reformed Federation, we only showed the inquirers that we too have values, which must not only be preserved but we are also willing to share its advantages with others. We have always been happy to commence discussions about getting closer together, as a matter of fact at our convention last September we went so far as to accord your National President, Dr. Zoltán Béky a standing ovation on his fine address on the importance of unity. This fine address coincided with our thoughts and desires for the convention to .discuss the ways and means of possibly getting closer together with you. I am delighted to inform you that our convention, at that time, unanimously accepted the proposal that the William Penn at all times keep open the avenues for possible merger with the Reformed Federation and other fraternal societies. Please understand, our convention did not resolve nilly-willy that we should merge with the Reformed Federation. We already know from vast experience that even before the preliminaries to such talks and discussion begin, a tremendous amount of good-will is needed. Then come the preliminaries and in an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust those who want to understand the sacred purpose, begin to understand each other’s position. This can not be accomplished through a one paragraph item in a publication, nor through correspondence, for a child that has not even been conceived it can not be given a name, nor can it select its Father. Let us give thanks here that the William Penn not only wanted to find ways of opening doors to the Reformed Many of our members are fathers. The accompanying page should be of special interest to them. It points out how big the odds are that they will not be around to see their children through college. While this chart only pinpoints the odds for fathers who are in the 25, 35, 45 age groups, the odds for others are equally high or higher. And, notice how quickly the odds climb from 1 out of 22 to 1 out of 4. In just 20 years! Is a college education something of value for a boy or girl to have? You KNOW it is! As recently as within our own generation, the value of a college education was a debatable subject. For then, making a living was not a particularly difficult task. The problem was not that of getting a job, but rather, of selecting which of the various openings available held the richest promise. A college education offered certain social and cultural advantages. But its importance as an economic, job-getting, and money-earning factor was not considered important. The difference between Federation but towards another venerable Hungarian group. We are making financial sacrifices and in the best fraternal spirit are trying to save and return this group to the Hungarians to whom it rightfully belongs. Regardless of what the future brings, let us always remember that after God, our first obligation is to those who entrusted their faith and hard earned pennies to our care so that we can provide bread for the widows and orphans with the magic of our life insurance certificates, to assist our ailing members and most importantly in these times, to provide sunshine for our indigent members. Let us never forget, that life insurance is the most powerful industry of this mighty nation, and in this powerful industry there is no slowing down, there is no stopping, only progress forward and upward. In order to keep in step we must always be prepared to introduce revolutionary innovations in the field of membership acquisition, dues collections and investing, yes there is no slowing or stopping in this industry only those who are willing to hurry are the ones who can keep step with the giants of the industry. It is my fond wish that the Good Lord give to both the Reformed Federation and the William Penn, loyalty, strength, vision, courage and resourcefulness to fullfill their sacred duties and obligations. And above all, may the good Lord nurture in our hearts the understanding that a great future awaits the American-Hungarian societies in the field of services and benefits to mankind. May your deliberations be fruitful. a college “grad” and one who had ‘“pulled himself up by his own bootstraps” wasn’t significant. Then, something happened. Many of you still remember quite vividly — just as I do — the terrible depression that hit in the ’30s. Suddenly, we found ourselves in a desperate fight to get or hold jobs. And, we also discovered that the people who had the most training were those first hired and the last fired. So education and training suddenly assumed a new significance. We realized that insofar as the on-coming generations are concerned, ECONOMIC SECURITY is bought and paid for by EDUCATION. And, it seems that everyone came to this realization at the same time because never before have our colleges, universities, and technical schools been so jammed as they are today. Not too long ago, colleges were soliciting students. Today, they are turning them away for lack of space. And unfortunately today — and more so tomorrow — the untrained man or woman finds it exceedingly difficult to find a satisfactory job. In a world of trained and highly skilled workers there are less and less jobs for the untrained. And, therefore, there will be little happiness or economic peace in the future for the untrained. A study based on the 1950 and 1960 census statistics indicates that college graduates can expect to earn over their working lifetimes $120,659 more than high school graduates. Is it worthwhile for you, as a parent, to make plans NOW to help your offsprings through college? These figures certainly would indicate that it is — at least to them. We know you love your children, so undoubtedly you will also feel it is worthwhile to make plans for them to get through college. Incidentally, the report I referred to above shows that it’s almost worth $80,000 for a youngster to get ALL THE WAY through college. If a man does not go on to obtain his college diploma, he can expect to earn only $42,193 more than highschool graduates over his working lifetime. This compares very unfavorably with the $120,659 more earned by college graduates. How can you set up college plans now—especially if you have young children—which will guarantee them college educations? You can do it easily, simply, and for a lot less money than you might imagine. Ask your William Penn Insurance Representative for the full story. Fraternally yours, Elmer Charles President 3
