Húsipar, 2003 (1) 2003. * * * Renewable energy and nutrients in waste water treatment by Dr. Árpád KARPATI chem. engineer The liquid and solid wastes of food processing and manufacturing industry and of the consumption of food products represent a significant source of energy and nutrients. The utilisation of these resources, however, needs properly controlled and appropriate technologies. In the case of using liquid wastes for irrigation the ammonium concentration could, evidently, strongly affect the growth of the crop. This means that both liquid and solid residuals must be placed onto or into the soil outside the growing season only. The agricultural use of the solid residuals of biogas production shall be different from that of ordinary manure, as the mixture of substances in the digestion process may create complications. It is difficult to ensure the quality-control of the raw material and therefore one also faces the risk of contamination.
