A vízkár-elhárítási védekezési munkák országos irányításának tapasztalatai... 29 of rainfall exceeded 50 years in several cases. High rainfall events of short duration have caused serious damages to the properties of the local governments, water management associations and private owners mostly in hilly areas. 36% of the water courses of mountainous and hilly areas are owned by the water authorities and water management associations, while the rest is owned by local governments and the citizens. The Water Damage Prevention and Control Information System (VIR), also supported by computerized data transmission, has been in full use during the entire defence work. The high level suitability of this system in supplying information for the defence operations has been proven. Nevertheless, the conditions of the operation of VIR must be further improved, with special regard to the connection between the centres of the water authorities and those of the defence operations along the levees.
