BARNA, C.E. and Dr. M. KARDOS (Ms), C.E. The starting point of the authors was the newly introduced economic system in Hungary, the development of a market oriented economy based on a mixed-type property-system, while they decided to update the methods used in water resources management, a professional field with great traditions in the country. This change had the consequence to re-assess the strategies of different infrastructural sectors, a further development of their conceptual bases, and a re-thinking of their conditions of operation. In the first part of the paper, the present situation in water resources management was outlined accompanied by some numerical information (Tables I-XII). The available time series based on long-term and good-quality information, and obtained by a well-organized observation network were proper indication of the level of development in water resources management. Updating and modernization are summarized in the second part of the paper, as it follows: - water resources should be part of the national assets and be utilized on the basis of their economic value, - water must be handled as a national power source that is an element of the environment, - water resources reserves, the system of main structures to supply and distribute water should compose a continuous productive and servicing infrastructure system of the different regions and settlements, - the system of interests must be expanded; tasks of the central government agencies, those of the local municipalities, associations, productive units, and individual citizens should be separated from each other. * * * Weiterentwicklung der Wasservorratswirtschaft von Dipl.-Ing.
