GÓG The geodetic levelling system needed for technical planning in the Tisza-Valley was set up by Mátyás Huszár before 1818. The base-point of the system was the lowest water level of the Tisza River at the city of Szeged ever experienced and labeled as 50 feet in altitude. The fixing of this level was realized at the water stage located beside the southern rondella of the castle of Szeged, just beside the water-bastion. Mr. Huszár took care also of the deployment of a series of fix points and had developed in this way the backbone of a levelling system. Flood levels were marked sometimes on the trunks of projecting trees (Fig. I). The oldest existing water stage (scaled according to feet and inches) has been found on the straight pillar of the 171 year-old bridge of the Elővíz-Canal (Fig. 2). In the years of 1842-43 a coordination of the levelling fix points was initiated and executed by Pál Vásárhelyi. The base-point was the average water level of the Adriatic Sea in the Gulf of Fiume. In this system, the „0" point of the water stage at Szeged received the value of 238'2"6"'.
