2. CONSTRUCTION OF THE KISKÖRE BARRAGE THE BARRAGE AND THE RELATED STRUCTURES In accordance with the provisions of the National Water Management Master Plan prepared for the entire territory of Hungary, the Kisköre Project has been realized in the central region of the Tisza River Valley as the largest, multi-purpose water management development in the catchment area of the river. The project comprises the Kisköre Barrage, the reservoir upstream thereof, the Nagykunság and Jászság main irrigation canals as the fundamental principal structures (Fig. 2.1 — 1). The water capacity provided by these principal structures is used to supply water to an irrigation system about 300,000 hectares large and to meet industrial and communal water demands in the region. 1. The barrage a) The barrage site The site for the barrage has been selected in a 1.8 km long cut of the right-hand bank, 404 km above the mouth of the Tisza River, in the vicinity of the village Kisköre. The choice was governed by the desire to ensure the most suitable diversion of the principal irrigation canals, to obtain the greatest possible storage space, to make the construction site easily accessible by both road and rail, as well as to realize the cut of the river bend in an economical and hydraulically efficient manner (Fig. 2.1—2). The three combined main structures of the barrage are the weir, the hydroelectric station and the navigation lock. The weir is located centrally and is flanked on the right-hand side by the power station, on the lefthand side by the navigation lock. Other closely related components of the barrage are the cut through a bend in the Tisza River, the closure of the old channel, the flood gate contributing to the release of flood discharges, the reservoir embankment and the construction of a guiding dike to ensure favourable approach flow conditions. The reservoir embankment and the new flood levee connect on the left-hand bank to the flood gate in the high water bed. The old channel of the Tisza River may also serve useful purposes as winter harbour, the connection with the new channel being ensured. 268
