(85) 5. Horváth, Iván, Mech. Engr. Dr. : Major operating and maintenance problems in Diesel-engine driven pumping sets in sprinkler irrigation (For the Hungarian text see pp. 478) The basic problem in Diesel-driven pumping sets is the change of lubricating oil, which in turn, is governed by tho quality of oil used, the frequency of refilling, the mechanical condition of the engine, the operating schedule and the load conditions. The process of oil fatigue can be described also in sprinkler irrigation by a function, the coefficients of which arc found from experimental data ( Fig. 1 ). The graph shown in Fig. 2 is constructed from the results. The cycle time of impeller renewal is preferably determined for reasons of economics. This is why the operating costs of the set have been analysed at different renewal periods (1000, 2500, 3000 and 4000 hours). The resulting unit costs per hour of operation have been plotted in Fig. 3. The advisable renewal period for the stuffing box is seen therefrom to be around 2200 to 2300 hours. 10 Vízügyi Közlemények
