(4 3) tation, in order to arrive on the basis of the qualification of the summarizing water balance at the as realistic as possible quantitative estimates on the potential degrees of development of various uses of water within a particular water management unit. From among the results of this investigation the description of the elastic method qualification based on three indices is likely to be of special interest, since, being the most involved, this comprises as particular cases the single- and two-index elastic qualification methods of which a detailed account is also included. The distribution of available resources during the reference period is assumed to be given by the characteristic water resources duration curve K 0(d, D) while the water demand has the / = constant value during the reference period. For qualifying the water management balance 011 the basis of three indices the following values must be available: k' and k" the points limiting the equilibrium interval of Lhe degree of water resources exploilaLion (£'«=1 and k"s* 1); d' and d" Lhe point limiting Lhe equilibrium interval of duration relaled Lo Hie toLal lenglh of Lhe period (rf'=SDM, (Í'^ Í Í M ), where Í / М = t and is the overall sensitivily Lo deficiencies of supply of wafer in unit E; D' and D" the points limiting the equilibrium interval of duration related to recurrence (D'=s D"). The above six values are assumed to be known —e.g. Lliey are specified in advance. These define in the system of coordinafes (K, d, D) Lhe equilibrium parallelepiped (k'=sk^k"; d'sid"; D'=s/J=s_D"). The branch of Lhe resources duration curve K u(d, D ) falling info the parallelepiped togelher with its limiling points is referred to the as equilibrium range of the curve. The branch of the curve exlending from Lhe equilibrium range to the poinl (K mi n , 0,0/ is lermed active, whereas Lliat extending from Lhe equilibrium range lo the point (A' ma x, 1,1) as passive. On the basis of the resources duration curve divided into lliree branches in Lhe above manner, the qualification of Lhe waler balance presenLs a simple Lask, inasmuch as Lhe qualificaLion of Lhe waler balance is idenlical to the qualification of Lhe branch of the resources duralion curve including Lhe poinl wilh the coordinate K n = I. The principles underlying the qualification of waler balances on lhe basis of one- or two indices are illuslrated diagrammatically in Fig. 3., while lhe three-index qualification is shown in Fig. 7. The practicability of the method of qualification suggested is demonstrated by practical examples (Figs. 5 and 9, Table V) Qualification of the water balance 011 Lhe basis of Lwo indices greatly increases — at the cosl of slighl added work — its informative power over single-index qualifications and its widespread, though for the time being not general, introduction is recommended at this stage already. Qualification based on three indices would involve considerable added work and its practical introduction must therefore be preceded by further research, concerned mainly with pelcntial simplification. ESTIMATION OF IRRIGATION COSTS IN DESIGNING SPRINKLER IRRIGATION SECTIONS By I. Pálfai, Civ. Engr. (For the Hungarian lexl see pp. 348) Calculation adopted for the estimation, of irrigation costs are demonsLraLed in conneclion willi Lhe designing of the Tápé sprinkler irrigation section situaled in the corner enclosed by the mouth of the Maros River and the Tisza River. The preliminary reporl on this section extending to 2970 heclares (7350 acres) and including Lhree farming cooperalives is Lhe firsl which was prepared by observing the principles of the new investment and crediting policy inlroduced recenlly in Hungary. The primary objeclive of Lhe presenl paper is Lo describe the method of estimation adjusted to the new investment and operaling condilions and Lo illusLraLe iL by a praclical example. AL the same time the resulls of these calculations provide data for evaluating the general economic performance of sections equipped for sprinkler irrigation.
