(11) THE SZEGED CONFERENCE ON SURFACE DRAINAGE on the 15th October, 1965. By I. Orlóczy, Engr. (For the Hungarian text see pp. Hi) Adverse weather conditions during the past few years, and especially in 1965 precipitation far in excess of the long-term average, caused severe damages to agriculture in Hungary. According to a forecast based on the analysis of hydrometeorological factors, the continuation of inclement weather conditions and snowmelt runoff greater than the average can be anticipated in Spring, 1966. The Great Hungarian Plains situated at the centre of the Carpathian Basin is most severely affected by snowmelt runoff, and this was the reason for which agencies interesed in water management — the District Water Authorities — called a conference to Szeged, on the banks of the Tisza River, for the 15th October, 1965, to which agricultural, administration and political agencies were invited. The objectives of the conference were: a) evaluation of snowmelt runoff conditions to be anticipated in the future, b) information for those interested in controlling water damages and c) engineering and organizational preparation. Five short papers inviting discussions were presented at the conference. These are published separately as Chapters 2—6 of the present paper. It was pointed out with special emphasis that the primary prerequisite for a systematic and continuous control of inundation damage due to surface runoff, is the careful coordination by agricultural operations of methods of plant growing and soil cultivation with inundation depth and frequency conditions of their lands. Individual chapters — as papers — are concerned with the following subjects: Chapter 2 with the present situation and tasks of surface drainage; Chapter 3 with the liydrometeorological evaluation of the past years and the probability of inundations due to surface runoff in 1966; Chapter á with the significance of surface drainage and experiences gained during the past year in this field; Chapter 5 with the possibilities of reducing and preventing damage caused by snowmelt runoff; Chapter 6 with organizational problems of surface drainage in Hungary. Chapter 7 contains the discussions contributed during the conference, the purpose of which was underlined thereby. In fact, the tasks and responsibilities of state water agencies, in charge of principal drainage structures, water associations, municipal and town councils, in charge drainage structures serving local purposes, as well as state and cooperative agricultural agencies in charge of agricultural areas have been formulated and coordinated. COLLECTION AND PROCESSING OF HYDROLOGIC DATA WITH SPECIAL REGARD TO REQUIREMENTS OF WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT By B. Csermák, Engr. (For the Hungarian text see pp. 50) The objective followed in collecting hydrologie data is in general to provide information, on the basis of which practical questions concerning hydrologie conditions to be anticipated in the future can be answered with a fair degree of reliability.
