21 were on the average produced on a hectare of meadow, and could be sold at 21 pengő per quintal, whereas after the regulation the average production has doubled and its value increased by 50 per cent, we can state that the rise in income has been about 40 pengő per hectare. But the average rise in income has greatly varied in the different communes ; in some the rise in income amounted to 84 pengő per hectare, while in another a decrease of 3 5 pengő per hectare was stated. The cause of the different changes in value may be explained by the fact that in some communes most of the meadows are in the flood area, and here the regulation of the brook has been almost a vital condition of cattle-breeding, whereas in other communes there are also good meadows outside the flood area, and the protected meadows are of less importance. The regulation of the brook affected the individual landowners in very different measures. Some would have paid 61-6 per cent of their annual income as a contribution to the regulation cost, if it could have been paid in one sum, and others would have paid only 20-4 per cent. This unequal interference with private economic life has justified the considerable government grant and loan, which have rendered it possible to carry out the regulation without a heavy burdening of individuals. These data give only approximate values of the results obtained, but it can be ascertained that the regulation of the Koppány brook has been a useful investment, though some interested parties have lost heavily. Furthermore it can be stated that the lucrative and useful character of such works depends not only on the technical accomplishment, but to a great extent on the proper solution of the financial problems. VI. DEVELOPMENT OF IRRIGATIONS IN 1936 ON THE TERRITORY OF THE LOWER— FEHÉR-KÖRÖS LEVEE COMPANY. By V. KIENITZ. (Pages : 107—121.) After the dry autumn and winter of 1935/36 many farmers were willing to establish irrigation on their fields. The weather was favourable for executing preparatory works. In the spring there was an abundant rainfall, making irrigation unnecessary, but in the course of the summer a drought lasting more than a month occurred, and irrigation was practised everywhere. In 1930, on the territory of the levee company, only 238 hectares, of 65 farms, was irrigated, while in 1936 the irrigated area amounted to 544 hectares distributed over 240 farms, which shows an increase of 127 per cent. In the previous years the irrigation of ploughed lands and orchards was practised only on experimental plants, while in 1936 the irrigations of ploughed lands in five places with a total area of 21 hectares and those of 13 orchaids with a total area of 75 hectares were established. Ploughed lands were irrigated by the method of lateral percolation, which
