of Europe and in many respects to Asiatic P. auritus. With these findings the existence of abeli-like animals is greatly extended in time-span, down to the Lower Pliocene. Another Plecotu s, a greater one from Osztramos Loc. 9 discussed in this paper, Plecotus (P. ) plio- caenicu s was found to be related to both P. austriacus and P. auritus. It could be considered as a common ancestor of these species, or at least a close relative of the hypothetical common ancestor. The present material of plecotines studied in this work is still far from giving sufficient clues either of the place (places 7 ) of origin of these bats, or of the time of emergence (evidently, it must have happened much earlier) and even the direction of probable migration routes.
