Fig. 1. Linear diagram of morphological indices DP/CI and L/T of froglets having the same mother or father. M - mean value, SD - standard deviation. The number and other explanation in Table 4 Morphology. Data are provided only for froglets that completed metamorphosis (Table 4). For the index DP/CI, the most diagnostic character for Central European water frogs (cf. BERGER 1966), range and mean are given; for the other indices, only the mean is tabulated. Progeny of crosses between an Italian hybrid and either R. esculent a or R. ridlbund a had the highest values of the indices DP/CI and T/CI, averaging more than 3.0 and 10.0 respectively (Table 4, crosses 17, 18); these are typical rtdibund a phenotypes. Three other crosses (5, 6 and 15) also had high values for these indices. In contrast, the progeny of the seven crosses between R. lessona e and Italian non-hybrids (crosses 7-13) had low, though rather variable, values for these indices. Values for the indices from the other crosses were Intermediate. Hybrids between R. lessona e and R. perez i (crosses 19-21) need special attention because they divided into two rather different morphological groups. Froglets fathered by the Portuguese male (cross 19) had rather low values for these indices, some of them were lessona e-like, and those fathered by the French males (crosses 20, 21) had them rather high, some froglets were rldibund a-ltke. Values for these indices, and especially for the ratio DP/CI are significantly distinct (crosses 19 and 20: t = 6.250, p< 0.001, df = 21; 19 and 21: t = 5.224, p< 0.001, df = 21).
