that the effect of the first glaciations on the fauna is not to be expected. For this very reason, I was extremly glad to discover in the last years a new assemblage of Plio-Pleistocene localities in North Hungary, on the southern confines of the Northern Carpathians. This is the Osztramos Hill (48° 30' North. Lat., 38° 25* East Long, in NE Hungary, near the Czechoslovakian border, the northernmost point of our country). In 1969-1972 we discovered thirteen different fissures and caves in the large Quarry System of the Osztramos, each with a rich microfauna representing different levels of the period from the Middle Pliocene to the Middle Pleistocene (see JÁN0SSY, 1970, 1972a, 1972b). One of these localities, labeled Locality 7 of Osztramos, is a typical tectonic fissure, explored, up to the present, to about twenty meters vertically and to the diameter of its 1-2 meters. It is covered with cal cite formations and any mix up is wholly excluded . The results of a preliminary determination of the fossil elements are as follows: Celtis sp . (seeds) An ura indet . Ophidia indet . Ophisaurus sp . ?Testudinata (large phalanx) Tetrao n . sp . Francolinus capeki LAMBRECHT Francolinus n. sp . (small) Bubo sp . Athene sp . Passeriformes indet. Talpa sp. Desmana sp .
